Mortality

Whenever a United States citizen dies they are added to the Social Security Death Index. 55 Jason Davis' have died since Social Security’s inception. Looking through the list of names, each one a Jason Davis, I realized that these Jasons mean nothing to me. They, despite our common Christian and family name, are complete strangers to me. Looking at this list I thought of how one day I’m going to be on that list, and some Jason Davis will look at MY name (more accurately, our name) and shrug off the fact that I had a life, family and friends, hopes and dreams, fears, and love. This future Jason Davis will look at my name and will have no idea that my biggest fear was that the only imprint I’ll leave on society is an entry in a database of names, birth dates, death dates, and social security numbers.

He’ll have no idea I was hung like a moose.
