Questions about studying in Japan

Apr 04, 2011 01:19

I want to know about other people`s experiences studying in Japan. Whether high school exchange, study abroad in college, a summer program, homestay, Japanese language school, Japanese language school at a university, undergrad and grad school, whatever it was, I`d really like to know more about it.

It`d be great if you guys could answer the questions below, and the more detailed the better. If you don`t want to post your answers for whatever reason but feel okay with PMing them to me, feel free to do so.

1. How long have you studied in Japan?

2. What were some of the reasons you chose to study in Japan?

3. What kind of program are/were you in for studying and where in Japan? (ex high school exchange at Japanese school, study abroad for two semester at a Oita University through currently enrolled university, etc)

4. What were the requirements for acceptance into the program? What was the application process like? How long did the application process take?

5. What kind of classes have you taken and/or are you currently taking? How many classes and hours a week? Why did you pick that kind of program? If possible, is there a different kind of program you would`ve liked to take instead? For example, studying at a Japanese language school for a year instead of study abroad in a Japanese exchange student program for a semester? Why?

6. In your personal opinion, what are the most prominent positive and negative points of the program you`re studying in? IE what things have you liked and what bothered you about it? And why? (ex. challenging and well-constructed classes, was perfect for my level, my teachers really motivated me, live close to school, loved my classmates, not enough student support, poorly taught classes, shitty housing, felt isolated, etc)

7. For negative points, whether you believe them to be mostly your own fault or the program`s (or specific people`s within the program), in your opinion, what kind of changes could be made to fix or reduce those problems?

8. While in the program, were you in any clubs or additional activities? Did you have a part time job? If yes, what kind?

9. Whether problems such as issues of not being familiar with the school or general rules/laws, getting harassed for being foreign, having trouble communicating with people or out shopping because of language barrier, what kinds of (personal or general) problems did you run into? Was it a continuous problem or if it was solved, how did the problem get solved?

10. Whether enjoying things such as getting the chance to make new friends from different parts of the world, being able to participate in traditional Japanese customs or simply live in Japan, or building your language proficiency, what were some of the best things you got out of your time in Japan?

11. Feel free to share any kind of additional info. I`d love to hear about it.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer, I really appreciate it.
