I feel for you-- after I'd lived in Japan for a month, I couldn't wait to get back here. you could probably come over right now somehow and make a living someplace, but it might be a lousy living. you've got a better shot at a *good* living situation if you get that American degree. however, that's not to say that you can't come over and visit or even take a sort of sabbatical here. (do cultural visas still exist? what are the details on those? anyone know?)
also, am I reading this right that you've only been to one year of college, which I guess would mean you have three more years to go? dude, if that's the case and you're not sure you're going to use your major, switch to something involving Japanese! you don't need a music degree to have a music career, but if you want to live in Japan and make any kind of money, it really helps to learn the language and maybe some other specialized knowledge regarding the country. like, you could go to a school that has a creative writing/nonfiction specialty, and then come over here and... write a book about Japanese music. or something. I dunno, anyway, good luck.
