yes, you need an international drivers license. When I got my passport for England, I asked about it and they said no (as it's the same language) so I didn't look any further. I would assume the motor vehicles dept in Holland might know or the consulate. Unfortunately, I don't know where to look for this info.

Maybe contacting the AAA would help. I know in Canada, my homeland, I would deal with the CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) for such a thing. MAybe if they have the same sort of organization there, they could be of some help.

You should get an international license. It really is simply a translation of your license. If you do not get the international license before you go to the US, you will have a hard time if you try to rent a car, but if you are using someone else's car you should be ok- however be sure that they have insurance for you to be driving. I have only used my dutch license in the US one time, but it was no problem.

Did you use it with or without the international drivers licence then?
My dad has been in the Stattes for 3 months for work once, back in 1994, and he told me he could just use his dutch licence indeed with no prop. But I want to be absolutely sure I won't run into any problems:)

I did not have any problem with just the dutch license when I rented a car. Just be certain about the insurance. I did need to have the international license in Canada everywhere in South America.

I just found the following on the net. I guess I now had a better hit with google then the last time I searched (or perhaps I just used a slightly different search):

So, I understand I *should* be ok with just my dutch licence, but to be absolutely sure, I'll just ( ... )

Also- call RDW, they can probably help you to a bureau in your area which can provide the international license for you.
