So Lonely

Hi.  I'm Cata.  I'm an American who is with my British husband on temporary secondment to London, UK.  I have been in England now for a year (originally only supposed to be six months).  We were sent from America on 7 days notice.  My husband's company has now extended the contract for another year when it will be "open for discussion" again.  My husband says in this economy we can't afford to say no and risk being let go.  However I am so lonely here.  I don't have a job and I spend my days alone in a corporate apartment.  I don't know how to find friends who share my interests. Because of my husband's job his colleagues aren't an option (all they talk about is cars and how horrible their commutes are any way).  I'm trying very hard.  We have tried meetup.com but don't seem to be finding people who match us.

Does any one have any suggestions on how to find friends?  I've even posted in some of the forums here on LJ as a last resort.  I don't know what to do and I'm out of ideas.  I don't know how much longer I can do this if I a't have any friends here.
