Sorry it took me so long to reply! I don't think you have to be a university student to do Tandem, although I think most of the programs are run by universities. If you google Tandem for your area, you should find the local programs, and then you can contact them to find out whether you can participate or not. I did my first one through a university and my second through an independent language school, so I am pretty sure there are ways to do it without being a university student.
As for me, I can't say that I've ever entirely gotten over the depression - it just becomes a question of adjustment. Some days are bad, and some are good. :D But for me, it's not really that I miss home....it's more a general sense of not really knowing what I'm doing. Finding a job here is really hard for a non-German, and since I really have no idea what I WANT to do with my life, I feel a bit lost. :P I guess things would be easier back in the US, but I do like it here and I don't want to leave, so I'm very conflicted. But trust me - the longer you stay here, the more it feels like home. ;)
