Hello! My wife and I are thinking of relocating to Ireland in the not too distant future (we are living in Poland right now) and I was wondering who here lives in Ireland (Dublin mainly) and has any good or bad experiences they would like to tell me about. That and names of neighborhoods that would be worth looking in for apartments/flats, etc. ( Read more... )

Well, the main thing you have to realise about Dublin is that it's really expensive. What kind of work do you do?

Also, transport and traffic are quite bad here, so you're probably better off deciding on where you want to live after you know where you're going to work.

How expensive is really expensive? If you had to guess, what would be the average rent for an apartment? Unfortunately, if we/I make a move, it will be a fairly blind move.

Well... it depends where you would want to live. If you would want ot be in the city centre, on the south side, it's more expensive than the north. It's really hard to give an "average" because...well... there isn't one. It's all dependent on where you want to live. I pay 1500 for a SMALL two bedroom in Dublin 8. It would be much more than that in Dublin 2, 4, 6... I imgine if you stayed in the low numbers on the North side it would be about the same. www.daft.ie or www.myhome.ie are pretty good places to start looking ( ... )

Actually, my wife is Polish, I'm American. And I'm fairly used to slagging here in Poland to tell the truth. And I've heard some of the same stories and such, so that's why I'm asking. Mainly we just want to get out of Warsaw!!!!

I still chuckle when I see it. I find it deliciously offensive. As for others not finding it funny...I'll try not to let that bother me too much. If someone actually is offended by my icon, they certainly don't have to look at it. To each his own.

Personally, I'd recommend Cork over Dublin, having lived in both places. Cork is a lot less expensive and offers a much more laid-back lifestyle. Rents in Cork are about €800-1000 per month for a 3-bed semi, furnished. There is a thriving Polish community here, including supermarkets and even a restaurant.

Good luck, hope it works out for you...Ireland is a wonderful place to live:)

Thank you! I met someone who lived in Cork, a while ago, but lost touch, and he was always telling me how nice it was. And in all honesty, my wife isn't at all concerned with the Polish culture as we basically want to leave to escape the Polish culture!!! I just need to keep searching for things I guess. The good thing is we're in no rush either...

It's nice to escape your culture, but it's also nice to be able to buy good pickles, and thanks to the Polish community, now we can:D

Plus I've gotten to enjoy Polish beer as well, so I suppose it'll be nice to have it readily available!!!
