is there word to describe people from the states, except for american? i'm finding that more and more offensive to people from canada and latin america the more i use it, and i'm looking for a alternative.

In certain contexts that can be taken offensively, though, so I'm not sure it's a perfect solution..

Nope, all Americans are Yanks. That's what we call them in Australia, too.

Here and I thought the term in Australia was Sepo. Anyway, although Yank is kind of common in Australia and around the world, it is a funny one, because it refers to a specific region of the US, as well as the US as a whole, and I think it really annoys the hell out of alot of people from the southern United States. I think its sort of akin (but not quite) as refering to all people from Great Britain as English. Thats how I see it anyway, but other people may have different views on it I guess.

"seppo" is rhyming slang for "yank" (seppo = septic tank = yank). And bad news, southerners, you're yanks too!
