Hi. I just joined. I'm an American living in Turkey (Turkish husband).
I wish I had found this community earlier-i've been here about 10 months.
Problems include
1. finding brown sugar to make chocolate chip cookies. and salsa. for months what they were calling salsa was kethup.
2. Taking taxis when I have either no idea where I am going or which word means left and which means right (they are really similar.)
3. Knowing which people i am supposed to kiss on both cheeks, which on one cheek and which not at all.
4. Remembering names that have no familiarity to me whatsoever.
5. Not being insulted when people are blunt -because they naturally are that way here.
6. voting of course-my county sent me the ballot a couple of days after the election.
7. attending conferences and meetings in Turkish when I have no idea what's going on.(i am a teacher=oh what a shock i know)
8. getting hit on -i think-by weird american when trying to make friends with other american here. come to think of it i met lots of weird foreigners here--case in point:
British guy: "How tall are you?"
Me: "5'11 but i dont know in centimeters."
British guy "Oh I know what inches are, but sometimes cm are better-that way i can say my dick is 25 cm long."
um yeah.
Anyway I'd love to make friends in my time zone. Americans are all sleeping when I am up.
