Stupid DMV...

OK, here is my extrapolated little circumstance - I am trying to get a California driver's license and the DMV here are really stupid. That's the short version. I'm hoping that perhaps a foreign national who got their California license can tell me what the procedure was, because the DMV can't seem to get their story straight

When we got naturalized we immediatly sent our citizenship papers off for passports. And I mean immediately. I had it for all of 30 sec before an assisstant stuffed it in an envelope.

Well before everything came back we went up to Canada. Citizens are allowed to cross with just a drivers licence.

Well on the way back in the clever pillock on the check point notices my parents have english accents. And askes all about it. When we say we are citizens he asked for how long. Of course we say only a couple of weeks. So then he starts asking us what the bloody paper looks like!!! Saying if it was only a couple of weeks ago we should know!!! It was like every other certificate you ever got rather none discript!

Luckily after bickering for a long time he just let us through.

:I'm glad I don't live there now. I never carried my Green Card with me (Like my Mother was going to let an 8 year old run around with it?!?!?) Still back then we were lucky and could just keep it with the passports. (For some reason I thought we asked someone and they said it just had to be produced in 24 hours, but I bet they were wrong)

It can't be both where are you from??

(I was all of 12 during this conversation. We eventually gave up. They consider me Canadian.)

Oh! I forgot my favorite!

To get a green card you need a birth certificate. Well Canadian birth certificates are laminated cards just bigger than a credit card.

They wouldn't accept it. Said they needed the origanal. We pointed out it /was/ the origanal. They still refuse.

Eventually we had to go to the hospital and ask for a copy. The hospital pointed out we had one. Yes, we know but they won't accept that. So the hospital could only give us a copy of the Microfesh record they had.

So the idiots wouldn't take the offical document but they'd take a hospital photo copy?!?!?!?
