Not long after the tanker, in the middle of nowhere, we passed several Nigerians lined up in the center of the highway, moaning loudly at us with outreached hands. “Who are those people?” Gunther asked his driver. “Lepers,” Big Joe said. “The government does not care for them, so they live in the bush and beg on the road.”
I remember that spot on the road- I made a day business trip to Akure once. My friend told me that there was a leper colony that lived just off the road there. When we came through, they had dug out the road and made giant pits so the cars had to stop to navigate around the holes- and give them a good shot at the passengers.
I've never heard of the Nigerian Field Society before, but I really, really wish that I had while I was there. I wanted to get out and see more of the country, but never really had the chance. I think a trip to Oshogbo to see the Yoruba shrines would be really cool.
Oshogbo would be cool. The Nigerian Field Society has been around since 1930. I'm sure they were active when you were here. But you could almost as easily do all of their trips yourself. It just helps to have a large, organized group led by people who've been to these places before.
