I read at USF for _This Bridge Called My Back_ with the host of other writers and it was hugely attended and quite a success. I was loved bombed by my fellow writers and the audience. That was on September 16th. I did the interview on the radio on Sept. 8th I believe. I should post that link.
I can't complain about life... though I could always use more living space. But I have a great roommate and a nice space, even if most of my stuff is still in storage. It's a housing crisis, there's not a lot of room here and everything is overpriced so what can you do?
I can still go into SF once a week, and I often do, if not always.
I'm adjusting to the suburban life. Because, while it is close to the ghetto, it is actually suburban life here in the East Bay. Here the suburbs are the ghettos, or some of the suburbs are. This portion is NOT ghetto but that is close, down below at the end of Solano. This is so-called "East Richmond Heights" and beautiful, near Wildcat Canyon. It is ethnically/racially mixed though mostly white... but way more mixed than suburbs in Denver. You can't compare. It is also filled with wonderfully different houses, from mid-century modern to older homes, art deco to newer styles. Some large, some smaller... different colors. I really do like it!
But it is not my city. I am not used to the suburbs and don't drive so... but I have started to get things delivered from Safeway Fresh. Next is trying Google Express... Safeway Fresh is cheaper than a taxi from Safeway to here, if you have them deliver at the right time. Even at full price is beats a cab by the tip! It is a great service. So that's a solution I am finding works.
I don't get out enough though... I can get into SF and Berkeley easily, or Oakland and I do go out, but it is always a money spender when I go. So I try and be prudent. There is not that sense like in The City where you walk outside and everything is there... of course, you always spend more money too. Especially now with the $10.00 bottles of juice in SF. Yes, I have spent $10.00 plus tax on a bottle of juice! It was good, but come on, how good can it be?
Anyway, I am not entirely sure suburbia is for me but it is not like I have a lot of choice. It has its nice spots. If I had my own house, I might like it better. But in any event, I am happy now and just trying to go forward.
