Personality: Coraline prides herself in being unique. There is nothing outrightly extraordinary about her-- she lives on normal, boring ol’ Earth with her normal family: no super powers, no epic explosions-- but she appreciates and seeks out those little quirks in the world. She is a self-proclaimed explorer and spends her time sating her curiosities on self-assigned adventures which she genuinely enjoys. As a child, she is naturally curious and full of energy, vigor, and imagination.
These traits are usually irksome to her parents, who are often too busy with their own lives to heed to her endless search for entertainment. Because of her parents’ lack of attentiveness, Coraline has become rather free-spirited and independent, often left to her own devices, but she also craves attention. She will go out of her way to be noticed, and purposefully irritates them just for a reaction. She has also developed quite the attitude, and tends to be snarky and short-tempered. She’s not above throwing tantrums or whining, but much prefers using wit and sarcasm to complain.
Though she isn’t exactly the most mature, Coraline is very intelligent and clever for her age. While she is curious and imaginative, she also has a good amount of common sense, and is able to recognize when her curiosity has taken her a bit too far, and will do what she must to right her wrongs. She can think in a pinch-- a skill that’s gotten her out of some pretty tough spots in the past. She is resourceful, and adaptable to a wide variety of situations.
While she displays a not-so-mature attitude toward her parents, Coraline genuinely cares about them, and them her. While she nearly abandons them for the seemingly welcoming world behind the wallpaper, she panics and regrets the thought once she realizes something... off about the world. When she discovers her parents are put in danger because of her actions, it doesn’t take her long to decide upon rescuing them-- a particularly daunting task. She proves herself to be brave, strong-willed, and loyal through this unwanted adventure, and ultimately gains some perspective-- be careful what you wish for.
Her little adventure through the door behind the wallpaper has prompted... a few little phobias as well, that should be noted. Number one, of course, is buttons. Number two, spiders. Coraline normally couldn't care less about how creepy-crawly an insect is... But after encountering the Other Mother, well...
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Adventurous: Even if Coraline’s status as an explorer is self-proclaimed, she definitely has a knack for it; she has a lot of energy and greatly enjoys adventuring in new places. She doesn’t mind dirt, insects, or any of the usual perils of exploring.
+ Clever: Coraline is rather intelligent for an average eleven-year-old, and a quick-thinker.
+ Independent: With her parents busy with work most of the time, Coraline is alone and left to her own devices pretty often. As such, she’s used to looking after herself.
+ Confident: She’s very sure of herself... most of the time. She’s not afraid to speak her mind, and loves to stand out in the boring old crowd.
+ Strong-willed
+ Loyal
+ Brave: Sure, she gets frightened just as often as any other child would. But she does what she has to do, despite her fear.
+ Feisty: If angered, tricked, or wronged in any way, she definitely will put up a fight, be it verbally or physically.
+/- Curious: Her curiosity can lead her to explore more efficiently, in ways, but can also be her downfall. She asks a lot of questions, but is always ready to investigate things for herself.
+/- Outspoken: In most cases, she’s not one to mince words. Some people appreciate that and find it refreshing. Others... don’t.
- Thrill-seeker: As is the point of her canon, Coraline’s boredom... can lead to bad things. This isn’t always a bad thing exactly... but it can be. It definitely can.
- Childish: Coraline may be very intelligent and independent for her age, but she is still a child, and not exactly mature.
- ... A little snippy: She’s got a bit of an attitude-- tends to be sarcastic, snarky, and short-tempered when irritated.

First Person Sample:
--thing like this back home.
[When the video function flickers to life, it’s obvious that someone’s Pokegear has been jostled quite a bit-- the image is fuzzy at the edges, and smudged with dirt. The girl it begins to film appears to be curled up in a bramble bush, judging by the way her knees are tucked up to her chest and she is surrounded by twigs, barren with winter. The girl speaks in a voice barely above a whisper, apparently aimed at the Sneasel perched haphazardly on her shoulder.]
Mom’d be all... “Don’t even think about getting something that that, Coraline Jones-- too expensive! And how would you go about learning about all that technology anyway?”
Sneeea.
Heh, yeah... Even if she’s kind of a stick in the mud and gets all... tyrannical overlord on me, though, I still--
... Aha!
[She looks directly into the screen for the first time in the post, tapping it experimentally with her fingertip before wiping the dirt from the lens with her sleeve. She grins broadly.]
Well, looks like it’s working now!
Sneasel!
Uh... Hello in there? Anyone? [She frowns a little and crosses her arms, choosing her words carefully. Sure, she’d explore the place herself, but a little preparation never hurt anyone.] Look, I don’t get what’s going on here with this... “world of Pokemon” business... But I’m apparently not the only one in this mess. Anyone who’s... not a psycho Mom-wannabe feel like answering some of my questions?
[She abruptly squints and shifts her eyes back and forth. She lowers her voice to a whisper.] And if any of you are her lackeys... You're gonna get it.
Third Person Sample: When Coraline awoke, she was immediately certain that whoever that wacko lady was... She was not her mother. In fact, they had absolutely nothing in common that Coraline would have been able to point out-- even their voices were different! And here, she had thought she would never have to deal with another Mother-wannabe in her life.
Needless to say, Coraline was ready to spring into action once the woman referred to her, sweetly, as “honey”. The woman seemed nice, and there were none of the tell-tale buttons sewn over her eyes, but Coraline stood her ground in “her room”, fists clenched.
“Only my mom can call me that,” she growled.
“What are you talking about, honey?” the woman questioned, seeming genuinely confused. “I am your mother, silly! Now hurry, you’ll be late for the start of your journey!”
“What... journey--?” But before Coraline had a chance to really argue her case, the woman was behind her, ushering her toward the door. “Wha-- Hey, wait a sec--!”
Suddenly, Coraline found herself outside, shivering and wrapping her arms around herself in response to the sudden gust of winter wind. She nearly jumped when the door abruptly shut and latched behind her. Locked.
Well... That was odd. If that lady was some kind of new Other Mother from the world behind the wallpaper, she wasn’t a very good one. What kind of Other Mother rushes you out instead of beckoning you in...?
It felt like something was unfinished though; Coraline whipped around and rapped on the locked door with her fists, hissing through her teeth.
“Witch! If this is some kinda trick, you won’t get away with it! And you’re--” Bang. “--not--” Bang. “--my--” Bang. “-- Mother!!” Bang.
She kept her fists closed and resting against the door for a minute afterward. The lack of a response from the other side of the door wasn’t exactly satisfying... but at least her “Mother” wasn’t attacking her. Coraline eventually backed away from the house, giving a small indignant “hmph” before heading out into more of the neighborhood--
“Nothing to say to that, huh? Well, fine then, I’ll just-- Woah.”
-- and nearly trampling the small critter that was suddenly sitting at her toes. It stared up at her, almost expectantly, its larger ear twitching. It appeared to be some sort of parody of a cat. White, gleaming claws were hidden by its three feathery tails. The claws and tails suggested something other than a cat, but the calm, fixing gaze in its eyes and the black, mangy fur reminded her of the Black Cat back home. It didn’t seem at all startled by Coraline’s approach. She wondered briefly, Was it... waiting for her?
“Oh... Hullo,” she started uncertainly, kneeling down to pet the strange-looking feline. “Where’d you come from...?”
