Hi! I am currently in SMU, majoring in psychology! It is true that it is easier to enter university through the JC route or A levels route, it is not confirm that you can enter (cos it is still based on your A levels result) but it is easier. Of course, there are people who from poly go university but it is really hard to enter and i heard your results must be really, really good.
To tell you the truth, A level is hard. It is really a struggle in terms of education and emotional struggle but I personally feel that it trains me for university life. I guess this is where your choice of stream and JC matters. In mainstream JC, there is the arts and science stream. I chose the arts stream because I am stronger in my humanities and languages. I also have a friend who took A levels in madrasah and he is now in university in Madinah.
So at the end of the day, it really depends on what is your strength and what do you like doing. If you choose the jc route, try taking subjects that you are good at/like so that it will be easier for you. Try discussing with your dad objectively, list out the pros and cons of each route and talk it out with him. I'm sure he will want the route that you will definitely succeed in :)
