So out of the halls of Hollywood comes: MOBY DICK, okay so you think some studio head smelling oscar bate has decided he's going to remake Moby Dick....not exactly. From AICN via Variety:
"The writers revere Melville’s original text, but their graphic novel-style version will change the structure. Gone is the first-person narration by the young seaman Ishmael, who observes how Ahab’s obsession with killing the great white whale overwhelms his good judgment as captain. This change will allow them to depict the whale’s decimation of other ships prior to its encounter with Ahab’s Pequod, and Ahab will be depicted more as a charismatic leader than a brooding obsessive. "Our vision isn’t your grandfather’s ‘Moby Dick,’ " Cooper said. "This is an opportunity to take a timeless classic and capitalize on the advances in visual effects to tell what at its core is an action-adventure revenge story."
SAY WHAT?! So what exactly happened here? Did some exec read a synopsis of Moby Dick and just read the key words "Sea", "Whale", and "Killing", and thought..."I know Jaws!".
And then this exec actually started reading a description of Captain Ahab and figured he was too unlikeable?
If you're going to reimagine something set it in fucking space! There's something we haven't seen Space Whales...or for that matter Space Whalers. Of course Star Trek 2 was basically Moby Dick in space but it didn't have space whales(Cpt. Kirk doesn't count).
Also this really begs the question: Who the fuck of this new hip generation with their ipods and twitter's and facebook actually wants to see a "Moby Dick" movie? I mean the minute I go into Barnes and Noble I know the kids are a hollering for Herman Mellville he even beats out that J.K. Rowling woman in terms of sales.
So if this hits it big, what's next dear readers? What works of classic literature can be butchered reimagined?
How about "A Tale of Two Cities" but this time Darnay knows Kung Fu, Keanu Reeves set to star.
"The Great Gatsby" as a Sci Fi politcal thriller.
What about "Ulysses" as a frat stoner comedy? Starring Seth Rogen and James Franco.
Maybe a better question is: What would Mellville think of this?
Of course the most relevant question:
Is originality completely dead in Hollywood?
In other news I'm the assistant editor on 18 year old virgin. The hours kinda blow but the work is fun and kinda interesting...if a little lonely.
