I'm relatively easy to please when it comes to genre movies. I only require one of two things: that the movie respects it's audience and itself, or the movie is completely and utterly bug fuck insane that it just makes up the damn rules as it goes along. I should add a caveat to that, otherwise any shred of credibility I have, as a film buff may be completely destroyed some of you may be saying to late on that one, to which I say "fuck you". Basically if a movie is willing to go bug nuts insane and through everything but the kitchen sink in your face it better be more like "Versus" than say..."Domino".
Along comes "Doomsday" a riff on old themes from "Escape From New York", "The Road Warrior", "28 Days Later", and some "Gladiator" thrown in for good measure. The film runs the gamut switching genre's with almost reckless abandon, but a certain amount of aplomb as well. Ya know what? I fucking loved it. I think the only way it could have been any better was if there was a dinosaur(or some similarly over sized creature) running around.
Here's the skinny: A deadly flesh eating virus breaks out in Glasgow in 2008, in order to contain the virus a wall is built around Scotland, the rules are simple, no one gets it, and no one gets out. 27 years later 2035 to be exact the virus is breaking out again, and the government who watches Glasgow notices survivors in the city, thinking there's a cure they send a badass Rhona Mitra without an eye(but no eye patch) and a military team to find a doctor(played by Malcolm MacDowell) who was working on a cure before the whole place got quarantined. They go in, and find society shot to hell, and on one end of the spectrum we've got your typical Post-Apocalyptic inhabitants punkers who are also cannibals, and on the other you've got Malcolm MacDowell and his crew who have set up shop in an abandoned castle.
The whole thing feels like a fever dream fueled by 2000AD comics, John Carpenter movies, and Road Warrior.
But seriously the flick rocks. I don't know what else to tell you. It just rocks. The music feels very John Caprenter-y, and the songs taken from outside sources are all 80's bands. In fact this film would be right at home in another Grindhouse double feature. Deliriously and hilariously over the top, and just completely bug nuts off its rocker.
You've got Malcolm MacDowell acting as a medieval king, and people who look like they walked out of a Simon Bisley comic. And a badass heroine who is totally awesome, oh and the final chase scene between generic Road Warrior type vehicles and a Bently is something that really needs to be believed...OH and a guys severed head flies at the camera and hits it!
Seriously, if you enjoy this type of thing, you'll love it.
I wanna see it again in fact.
