“I’m glad you’ve arrived. It’s been a while since we got fresh meat,” the looming character whispers as he stands up to meet him. He’s much skinnier than in the photographs; but the dark circles around his eyes and his gray cheeks are the same as how it looked on the Wikipedia page that he had checked before driving to his new employment.

Wu Yifan looks like a skeleton with popping bones, skinny limbs and a curved spine. He reminds Yixing of a Halloween character with his slender fingers and the way his teeth peek between his lips when he smiles widely. His Mandarin is heavily accented and his voice is harsh like he had a sore throat. Yixing finds out why when he steps closer and a cloak of cigarette smoke accompanies Dr. Wu.

Dr. Wu was the head of the Psychiatric Hospital in the middle of nowhere. He held his title of nine years with a tight fist, and the Han Sung Psychiatric Hospital was both highly underfunded and understaffed. Years ago, this community had been populated with many post-war veterans stricken with post-traumatic stress disorder. The community had decided that there were too many suicides, murders and domestic abuse in their hamlet, and erected the Han Sung Psychiatric Hospital after a well-known doctor that had tried to help many of those post-war veterans with as much strength as possible.

When the main doctor retired, the hospital fell into a long-standing era of nothingness, and many of the people living around there considered tearing it down and putting up a plaque instead. Yet, when a serial killer locked up eight, young girls and used their bodies to make food for his restaurant, the inhabitants decided that maybe they should keep it.

Nowadays, the Han Sung Psychiatric Hospital was the number one destination if you had a sick family member but at the same time, you didn’t have enough money to give them the best care possible. Many of the patients were just dropped off here and lived the rest of their lives in the hospital-thus; the hospital was renowned for having a horrible success rate, and a dictator of a head doctor.

Yet, Yixing didn’t have anywhere else to go, really. After leaving university, many places deemed his skills not up to par, and he couldn’t afford any more years of school. So, after working at Starbucks for a couple years, Dr. Wu sent him an e-mail asking (that sounded oddly like begging to Yixing) if he would like to take up a two-year engagement at the Han Sung Psychiatric Hospital.

Here he was, with a living Jack Skellington.

“Well then,” Dr. Wu manages a tar-covered smile, “Let’s do a tour, why don’t we?”
