Sehun grips the steering wheel with both hands, feeling his palms sticking on the leather. He puts on the headset that Yixing gave out to him earlier as he watches Kyungsoo going around the crowd to collect bets. He cracks his neck and trains his eyes on the road as he lets the roaring sound of the engine fill his skull. The sound has that calming effect on Sehun; he loves it, especially when he’s well aware that tonight’s race is going to be different.
A yellow Honda S2000 saddles up on his left. Sehun makes a face at Jongin, who had rolled down the window of his S2000 only to toss a sticky bubblegum at Sehun’s blue and white Skyline. Jongin smirks and rests back on his seat, looking completely unfazed as Sehun shoots his infamous glares at the other’s direction.
“Are you trying to undress me with your eyes?” Jongin’s voice booms through Sehun’s headset and Sehun cringes at the obnoxious laugh that follows the other boy’s remarks.
“Fuck you,” Sehun hisses through his teeth as he wills himself not to ram his car into Jongin’s sleek roadster.
“Oh, no, please. Not in this lifetime,” Jongin says, his lips pulling into that smirk that Sehun wants to punch off his face.
Before Sehun could retaliate, another voice interrupts, “Shut the fuck up, Kim Jongin.”
Sehun turns his head to his right to see a white Eclipse GT pulling up next to his Skyline. He swallows thickly when the driver rolls down his window and sticks his head through it. His bowed lips form a lopsided grin as he looks at Sehun and Jongin. Sehun’s face heats up and he looks away, fixing his eyes on the asphalt once again. His heart is already picking up speed, revving up past 120mph in his system and Sehun thinks it’s not fair because the race is yet to begin.
But then, Sehun is most definitely happy because Zitao is back.
There’s something about Zitao. Sehun doesn’t even know why but ever since the Chinese racer showed up in his life with that amazing Eclipse of his, Sehun can compare himself to a car with a bad tuning. It doesn’t even help when Zitao starts to hang out in Minseok’s garage which Sehun always goes to and then, as easily as that, they end up with the same circle of friends. Zitao doesn’t speak much but to Sehun, his eyes tell a lot of stories. The way his eyes crinkle into half-moons when he laughs at Chanyeol’s lame jokes is enough to tell Sehun that Zitao is in a good mood and when the shadows under his eyes seem darker than usual, Sehun can tell that Zitao is having a rough day.
Sehun doesn’t like to admit it but when Zitao’s around, flaunting his long legs clad in leather pants and metal piercings clasped at his ears, his heart is always running on turbo. That’s why when Zitao suddenly disappeared one morning, leaving Sehun curled up alone on the bed, and a note scrawled in messy handwriting on the bedside table, Sehun found himself in a drag race with the other boy. Their relationship is complicated. When Zitao is already near the finishing line, waiting for Sehun to catch up, Sehun is too busy thinking, too busy warming up his engine. In the end, he watches and watches as Zitao’s car speeds up, leaving black tire marks for Sehun to trail behind him.
“to Qingdao,” the note said and Sehun realized that he should have left the starting line sooner than later.
“Your Prince Charming finally came with his white horse.”
Luhan’s face hovers near Sehun’s open window and Sehun sees a ghost of a smile on the elder’s lips. Sehun blushes; only Luhan knows about him and Zitao - all it takes is a drunken, pissed Sehun when Zitao suddenly went back to Qingdao without even telling him and Luhan just happened to be there when Sehun bawled his eyes out and eventually erupted with confessions and denials. Sehun was never really good at expressing himself but Luhan got the gist of it.
Luhan squeezes Sehun’s shoulder lightly. “Thanks for bringing him back, Sehun-ah. I’m sure that he misses you.”
“He misses all of us,” Sehun says. “He misses… this. I know it.”
