warmth bubbles in sehun's chest and he clings onto tao tightly, closing his eyes in his arms. tao had always been sweet to him, despite only being a summer older. he was definitely much nicer to him than jongin, even though they were only months apart. tao was always the one to teach him new moves, to give an extra piece of meat during dinner, and tell him legends about great alphas and even subordinates that rose up the ranks in packs of old by the fire, tracing the stories of infamous battles over sehun's full belly.
jongin always warned sehun not to get too attached to tao, that he was destined to be baekhyun's mate and not his own, but sehun always sought after tao anyways, who was always ready to hold him, listen to his complaints and treat him like a friend, while he was met with criticism and rejection by the others. it wasn't hard not to grow attached to tao, but the gentle whispers shared by him and baekhyun in the dark, alone, and the soft moans, that he knows belongs to tao, he hears at night, when he tries to go to sleep make sehun's heart sink and wonder when tao will stop being so kind to him. will be when he can no longer fit into his arms or after his coming of age ceremony? will he lose tao just as he had lost jongin's attention, who was supposed to become his mate, so easily to maturity and a chance to get into kris' good graces?
sehun wasn't prepared to think about that right now, so he snuggles close into tao's arms and sleeps.
the next time he opens his eyes, the pack has stopped moving and was setting up camp in an empty clearing.
sehun tries to move but tao holds him tightly. baekhyun creates a leaf bed for sehun, with jongin's help, and tao rests sehun down on it when they are finished. sehun notices jongin holding his hands and watching with distress grow on his face. he smiles weakly at jongin, "i'm going to be fine," he whispers reassuringly to jongin. jongin nods but his eyes were terrified.
yixing kneels down beside sehun and touches sehun's thigh, which causes sehun to yelp in pain. jongin tries to reach for sehun's hand but tao is faster. baekhyun glares at tao but tao ignores him, looking only at sehun. he kneels down next to the pup's head and holds his hand tightly. sehun sniffles and lets out a groan when yixing attempts to move his thigh. sehun looks down when his eyes catch a pink gash on his thigh. he did not notice when he was walking. tao's face pales a little and his grip on sehun's hand tightens. he hadn't noticed it either.
jongin makes a pained noise and moves away from them, disappearing by the trees. baekhyun follows him, still glaring at tao but tao's eyes were staring intently at sehun's newly found wound.
"the cut isn't deep," yixing says, his voice comforting, "i'll put some aloe on it, kyungsoo," he calls to the small boy who he was fashioning to be his apprentice, "give me my bag."
the boy rushes over and quickly hands him a pouch made out of old cotton patches and yixing pulls out a handful of aloe leaves. he chews them and places the mush onto the wound, which makes sehun whimper. tao clutches his hand and leans forward, whispering soothing words into sehun's ears.
"thank goodness we didn't walk that far," yixing says, "or else it would have been much more worse." yixing's tone became disappointed as he frowns, "you should have checked his wounds tao, i thought you knew this."
tao looks up and then nods, shamefaced. sehun stares at the frustration settling on tao's face and he gives tao's hand a squeeze. "it's okay," sehun says in a small voice.
tao nods, giving him a tight smile and pets his hair, which causes sehun to slowly drift off to sleep.

"i'm sorry i carried you," tao murmurs. sehun can hear the regret in tao's voice. sehun shakes his head, "don't be, you were just trying to help."
"i could have seriously hurt you," tao says and mumbles lowly, "maybe i shouldn't baby you so much after all."
concern rushes through sehun's body and he buries his face deeper into tao's chest. "no, don't do that." he says.
tao places his hand on the back of sehun's head and pulls him close. sehun digs his hands into tao's chest, tears blurring his vision.
"why not," tao says softly and sehun sniffles. "if you do," sehun mutters, "if you do, that means you'll stop looking after me. and i don't want you to leave me, i mean, stop caring for me."
tao moves his hand and grazes sehun's cheek gently, causing sehun to shiver. "i'll never stop caring for you," tao says adamantly. "never."
sehun nods and tears fall down his cheeks. there is a silence between them and tao wraps sehun in his arms tightly. sehun bites the inside of his mouth, refusing to cry as tao buries his face into his neck. his lips tremble against sehun's skin, "i just don't want to make you weak, sehun, i don't want to lose you."
tao's voice is so low that sehun barely hears him but he nods and closes his eyes, tries and fails to slow his beating heart, and smiles a little.
"you're sounding like the subordinate here," sehun mutters and tao moves away from his neck. "where is your authoritative voice?"
tao gives him a bemused look and then he relaxes, "would you like me spank you and tell you to grow up?"
sehun blushes and murmurs, "no." sehun lowers his eyes and then looks up expectantly at tao, who is beaming at him.
tao leaves a little space between them but his arms still can reach him. they spend the rest of the night giggling and whispering about jongin's tears and how he begged tao not to tell sehun while sehun had been resting until a loud, tired voice-jongdae's-yells at them to go to sleep.
sehun and tao grin at each other, snickering a little, before closing their eyes. sehun moves a little, smile still on his face as he relaxes in his sleep.
another night goes by and sehun grows older, taller, but,he hopes, still worthy of tao's love and care.

Plus I ship Baektao and Sekai too, so adding them in was a big bonus for me ;A;
