When he wakes up every morning, he makes a list of things he has done the day before, things he has to improve on, and things he should accomplish by the next morning. He depends on this habit - this routine - to get through the day. It doesn't matter if he feels half-dead when they return to their dorm at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if he is so tired that he can't even drag himself back to his room, all that matters is that he has tried his best, he has done something, and he has succeeded somehow.
Their trips to and fro the airports are the most exhausting schedule, Junmyeon concludes as he is shoved by the mass of fans shouting their names, shouting all sorts of things. He reaches out to catch Jongin when the still sleepy (and thus, disoriented) boy almost fell over from an exceptionally strong push from the left. "Careful," he mutters, and Jongin breathes a "Thank you, hyung." as he struggles to catch up with Kyungsoo, who is looking back at them worriedly.
Junmyeon is so focused on Jongin's safety that he is caught off guard by a hand grabbing onto his bag, then another hand reaching out for his right arm, nails digging into flesh and making him wince in pain. "Oppa!" the fan called out, "Oppa, I love you!"
It is a complete mess. He hears the desperation and the passion in her voice, he knows that it is supposed to warm him, but the pain in his arm is too distracting.
"T - thank you," he finally hears his own voice say, shaky, and then a pair of familiar arms are calmly tugging him away. Security staffs steps in and a new barrier is formed between the fans and the six of them, and Junmyeon looks up to find himself breathing in the safety of Chanyeol's smile.
"Let's go, hyung," Chanyeol says, ignoring the way Junmyeon is looking at him, reaching out to put his arm around Junmyeon's shoulder, feeling how Junmyeon easily fits against his body, and carefully leads the two of them out of the welcoming crowd.

"You can't show them that you're unhappy, Chanyeol," he remembers himself pulling Chanyeol back after a dance practice, having seen how Chanyeol had been reluctant to attend the session and had not even tried to keep up with the moves taught to them, "Not behind closed doors, and definitely not in front of fans."
"Is that why you are always smiling, hyung?" Chanyeol replied.
Junmyeon can still feel that jolt in his heart when he plays back the memory in his head. He can still feel the trepidation in his voice when he had replied, "Of course. I am playing the role of the Guardian. I have to smile."
Chanyeol, instead of responding, had simply nodded, muttered an apology, and walked out of the practice room, letting Junmyeon drown in his little world of confusion.
Back then, Junmyeon wonders, was it the right thing for me to say?
It has been eleven months. He still doesn't have an answer.

"W - what?"
Chanyeol stares at him, "I want to talk to you about something."
For some reason, Junmyeon finds his heart beating faster, harder, and there is something stuck in his throat, making it hard for him to speak. "Go ahead," he finally chokes out.
"Not here." Chanyeol turns around, meets Sehun's curious gaze, and gives the maknae a dirty look - one that says Get Out Of Here And Tell Nobody About This.
"Oh," Junmyeon thinks about it for a while - his heart is still racing, "Let's take a walk then, maybe get some grocery for next week? I think Kyungsoo mentioned something about us running out of healthy food."
"At the rate he is shoving those things down our throats," Chanyeol grumbles, nose scrunching up cutely as he thinks about the Kyungsoo's Healthy Meals he, along with the two youngest members, have been forced to eat, "No wonder we're running out on them."
Junmyeon laughs, grabbing his wallet from the shelf lined against their television set, "Those things are not that bad, they're just fresh fruits and vegetables."
Chanyeol shudders exaggeratedly, making another face. "Nasty, green things."
Junmyeon doesn't forget that his palms are sweaty or that his heartbeats are so fast that it hurts, but he can't stop himself from laughing harder at Chanyeol's antics.
Side by side, they walk out of the building with the big, neon sign which reads Responsibilities.

"Last Thursday?" Chanyeol finishes, grinning, " No probs, hyung, it was nothing."
Having the words robbed from him, Junmyeon doesn't really know how to continue or what to reply with. There are things he wants to say and things he doesn't, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to collect his thoughts and sort them out in his head. When it gets to Chanyeol, the lines between Suho and Junmyeon always start to blur.
"Hyung..." Chanyeol is the one to break the silence, startling Junmyeon for the second time that day.
"What?" He says, keeping his tone light.
"You know, before our showcase," Chanyeol begins, almost tripping over his own foot as he tries hard to finish his sentences before his new-found (and very much temporary) courage runs away, "That one time when you told me that we have to keep smiling no matter what, even behind closed doors? That you have to keep smiling because you are the Guardian to the fans and to the members?"
It seems like Junmyeon doesn't have to try so hard to collect his thoughts, after all, because Chanyeol has brought it up first.
"Yes," he replies, blinking furiously, throat feeling dry, "Yes, I did say that."
Another jolt.
Chanyeol's hand brushes against his and before he can pull away, his hand is held in bigger, warmer hands. He looks at Chanyeol, eyes wide in surprise, and finds that the other is all flustered, cheeks red as he hastily looks way, staring intently at a store sign which reads "50% Discount For Your Womanly Needs".
The weather is a little unpredictable and there are very few people on the streets. Junmyeon knows that Suho should be worrying about cameras and fans seeing Chanyeol holding Junmyeon's hand in his, but Suho seems to be keeping mum about it.
"I just want you to know," Chanyeol says, sneaking a glance at Junmyeon equally (if not more) flustered expression, "With me, you don't have to always smile. I like you whether you are smiling or not, so you don't have to pretend."
Ah, there it is, Junmyeon realizes. These are the things one wants to say and at the same time, doesn't quite dare to say. Chanyeol has said it all. Just like that, plain and simple.
A gust of wind blows, messing up Junmyeon's hair, but his chest is filled with nothing but the warmth from Chanyeol's confession.

It is time for another trip to the airport again.
Smiling, heart hurting from the happiness he is feeling, he places both hands on broad shoulders. When he breathes, he can smell the brand of coffee Chanyeol always drinks. He is still the leader, he knows that, he still has to play the role of Suho.
But now, with Chanyeol next to him, supportive, Junmyeon thinks he will be just fine.
