Kris stands staring at the gravestone. Kim Joonmyun. Oh Sehun. Fake birth dates and real years of death. He can imagine the fight Suho would have had to keep them under one gravesite. How Sehun would have rewarded him for it.
He had walked in on these rewards a few too many times. He really wishes they had learned how to work the locks. Just a little thought, just a little nudge of the mind and the doors would have listened.
And you might be alone. Which you should never be.
Joonmyun would have told him it was fine to grieve, would have put his arm around Kris' shoulders and sung softly to him, lullabies his mother had taught him. Some in alien tongues he had learned on the course of their travels. Sehun would crouch awkwardly next to them, expression flattened in worry, eventually pulling faces to get Kris to laugh.
Neither are here now, and he has no comfort but the red and white striped sweater and the black hat with a yellow bill. They don't even smell like their owners, only the scent of the TARDIS’ steam wash.
Don't be alone, Doctor.
Kris settles against the monument, book open. He rereads the beginning again. He doesn't know how Suho, who he has abandoned and mislead and missed and was late for can still think about him, the stupid Time Lord with a God complex. The stupid Time Lord who caused them to be in New York and allowed them to be kidnapped. Suho who had run to met the Angel on the chance it would reunite him with Sehun. Suho who couldn't even think of a life without Sehun.
Even when they couldn't remember each other, they were drawn together. Protected each other without questioning why.
He is glad that he had taken the couple to future Earth, to have them legally married on their own planet. Then they had done a tour of planets with interesting mating rites, and had them married there. He had succeeded 9 times before Sehun whined his way out of anymore, ignoring Joonmyun until Joonmyun had fought Kris on the matter.
Kris had walked in on that reward too.
And do one more thing for me.
He finds it hard to believe, that after everything that had happened to the two of them because of him, that Suho had left a message just for him. Knowing he had the book, knowing he would be told to read it. Suho had known he would need this goodbye.
Always looking after him, that Suho.
Sehun liked to whine about that, too.
There's a little boy waiting in a garden. He's going to wait a long while, so he's going to need a lot of hope. Go to him. Tell him a story. Tell him that if he's patient, the days are coming that he'll never forget.
He doesn't think he will ever be able to face little Joonmyun. How can he go back to that last page and tell that child to wait for great things, without warning him of what will happen. How can Kris go to that child and encourage him without telling him of this day and-
Tell him he'll go to see and fight pirates. He'll fall in love with a man who'll wait two thousand years to keep him safe. Tell him he'll give hope to the greatest painter who ever lived.
Maybe he will need to warn little Joonmyun about jealous lovers and is 7 too young for that? But god can Sehun throw a punch.
And save a whale in outer space. Tell him, this is the story of Kim Joonmyun.
-And how can Kris leave Joonmyun waiting twice on that beat up suitcase in the garden on a cold fall night? When Suho is ordering him to go back? That day was Suho's first page. It was Kris all along who went back to tell him to wait, that he would make it back, that they would have grand adventures together.
That he would be happy, in the end.
Because as Kris heads back to the TARDIS, he knows without a doubt that Suho is happy back in New York, with Sehun by his side. Writing about their adventures as mystery books.
Kris is sad right now, but they aren't.
Kris can be happy for them, he thinks, leaving behind the sweater and hat. They would demand he move on. He believes he can, eventually.
He has the TARDIS, after all.
And this is how it ends.
