All things considered, Lulu and crew had the better costumes. They matched from head to toe and were identifiable at first glance as Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup-and they coincidentally even had the perfect hair colours to match their respective character. But it was lucky for Tao that the costume competition was judged by popularity, not overall quality, because based pretty much on pure aesthetics (maybe only one in five people figured out who they were dressed up as), Charlie's Angels won over The Powerpuff Girls at a vote of three to one.
Tao accepted first prize on behalf of the team and held her precious pack of gift certificates close to her chest while she tearfully thanked Sehuna and Kristina for supporting her. She skipped off the stage, blowing kisses to the cheering audience, and immediately jumped onto Sehuna for a hug.
"Yay," Sehuna said into Tao's neck, squeezing tight, and Tao had squeezed her back.
Kris was clapping too. Tao beamed at her, and Kris ruffled her hair.
With all that finally over with, Sehuna finds herself in a slow dance with her elementary school crush, Jongin, while Kyungsoo oppa and Chenchen unni sing a couples ballad from the stage. Across the gym floor, Kris is dancing with an enraptured Chanyeol, and not too far away from them, Tao and Baekhyun unni are sitting on the fold-out chairs, their heads bent together in deep gossip, unabashedly staring at them and laughing.
"You look very nice," says Jongin, smiling shyly at her. He's dressed as a Victorian gentleman, top hat and all. His hand on her waist is warm and strong and it's making Sehuna blush, despite herself.
"Thanks," says Sehuna, trying not to wince at her lisp. "Tao picked out the costumes."
Jongin laughs. "You'll have to pass my compliments onto her then."
"I will," says Sehuna demurely, thinking of other ways she could show her appreciate for Tao later that evening.
Soon enough, the party dwindles: students start trickling out of the gym and the teachers and chaperones start stacking empty chairs together. Yixing, Lulu, and Minseok unni were helping as part of the party's decorating committee, but Kris calls them over so the six of them could get a group picture together: six female superheroes, all clustered together and smelling like chocolate and fruit punch.
Chen promises to feature them on the front page of next week's school newspaper.
When Sehuna and Tao grab their jackets and purses, and after Tao has run back to grab Lulu for a surprise noogie, they make their way towards the bus stop-except Kris is outside, waiting for them in the parking lot, leaning against her car like a pin-up model.
Sehuna's throat goes dry at the sight of her.
"Happy?" she asks them, raising her eyebrows at Tao.
"Yeah," says Tao. "And you?"
"Less traumatizing than I'd imagined," allows Kris. "I only got reprimanded three times for wearing something so revealing."
The smile drops off Tao's face. "Oh, shit. I'm sorry, I didn't know that-"
"It's okay," Kris says, holding up a hand. "It's not a big deal. Halloween and all that, right?" She nods at Sehun.
"Right," says Sehuna, nudging Tao. "Don't feel bad. We won the contest."
"Ah," Tao says, brightening up again. "We did. We totally rocked everyone's world."
"About that," Kris says, her smile twisting into a completely devilish smirk, "What about my prize?"
That makes Tao whip to Sehuna, grabbing Sehuna's wrist. "Okay, before you get mad at me-"
Sehuna stiffens, bewildered. "Wait, what?"
"-I needed to make Kris jie agree to wear the outfit and I knew that she was interested in us because of our dirty talk the other day-"
"What? What are you talking about?"
"-and honestly, it's okay, right? Because you like Kris jie too, and you always say how pretty she is, and I remember that sex dream you had about her even if you don't because you were so drunk-"
"Oh my god," spits Sehun.
