He whined in the back of his throat when hands started to pull the covers away from his body. "Baekhyun, I swear to God," he said, resisting the persistent pulls.
They didn't stop, but began to be accompanied by breathy whimpers. Chanyeol let the covers go and planted his hands on the mattress before pushing himself bolt upright with a face of thunder. "Stop!" He yelled in a gravelly, sleep thick voice.
Instead of Baekhyun's petulant face, he was faced with a teary eyed Kyungsoo. "Kyungsoo, what are you doing in here? Did you have a nightmare?" Chanyeol blurted out in confusion.
He was beginning to come to his senses. Baekhyun had left for a business trip in Japan that morning and now it was three in the morning, according to his alarm clock.
"Baby," he asked, pulling Kyungsoo's tiny shivering body closer with one arm and dragging the quilt up around them. He was cold when his son was usually so warm and soft. Chanyeol rubbed his hand along Kyungsoo's arm and it came away wet. "Baby, why are you soaking?"
"Daddy, there's a storm," Kyungsoo replied in a loud whisper, snuggling in. "I opened the back door with the big key and I went outside."
Chanyeol nodded, he wouldn't be telling Baekhyun about this. He had forgotten to deadlock the back door and despite that Kyungsoo was only five, he was already quite savvy with the lock. "Why did you go out?"
"I wanted to check on my ferret. I went out the back door and I walked down the path and I crossed the grass..." Chanyeol just stripped off Kyungsoo's wet clothes as he waited for him to get to the point, the kid couldn't half ramble.
"Lift," he said, and Kyungsoo lifted his hips so he could pull the sodden trousers off, without stopping his description of how he passed the tree with the swing which was swinging very much because of the wind and walked along the fence.
"...and then I went to see my ferret because he was lonely and it was cold and - and... Daddy." He eyes welled up with tears again and his voice got low and whiny. "Daddy, he was sleeping so I tried to wake him up but he was super cold and I never feel good when I'm cold."
Chanyeol thought to the ferret. It was old now and they'd been waiting for it to die for a while. He hoped they could get a puppy next. "Baby, do you know what happened to your ferret?"
Kyungsoo shook his head and Chanyeol wasn't sure whether to feel happy that his son wasn't quite clued up on life or sad that he would either have to lie or be the one to explain that Spiderman, the ferret, was not coming back.
"No, Daddy, I didn't. So I brought him in here to show you." Kyungsoo wriggled away to pick up something on the unoccupied side of the bed. The animal was stiff and very obviously dead, Chanyeol realised what that cold, wet something pressing against his back had been.
With deliberate slowness, he got out of bed, ignoring the way the temperature made goosebumps run up and down his arms and legs. He took the ferret from Kyungsoo's arms and walked over to the window. "Kyungsoo, close your eyes," he said and Kyungsoo did as he was told, squeezing his eyes as tight as he could. Chanyeol opened the window and threw the body out into the storm.
"Kyungsoo, your ferret just ran away. But don't worry, Daddy will get you a new one."
