From the corner of his eyes, he catches one wolf distanced from the group. Not ostracized but one stemming from individual choice. Yifan stills for a moment, gathering his thoughts when the Zitao and Chanyeol finally offer their alpha freedom.
The wolf is facing away from the group as if he was hiding something. He has a feeling Joonmyeon or Luhan had already tried to invite the individual back into the group but was shot down. No amount of words can sway a stubborn one. But the way he curls concerns Yifan. It is curious that Yixing has not found out yet. He usually catches onto things like this quicker than the rest. By the time Yifan usually finds out, the wolf has already been healed from Yixing smuggling herbs to the other.
This wolf has been concealing his limps quite well but the seemingly lethargic drags are unnatural. Despite his lethargic tendencies that can match Yifan's sin of sloth, Kyungsoo is not one to allow himself to drag his fellow pack members down. He's a wolf with a strong sense of responsibilities after all. It must have been from the last hunt that Yifan had led. Kyungsoo is one of the most talented amongst the pack with a strong scent of smell. He is their main tracker as well as the strongest amongst them in terms of how to utilize his compact body to capture their prey. He must have landed wrongly, causing such an injury. Part of Yifan is furious because he can't fathom why it is necessary to hide such an injury. The other part is just exasperated as he untangles himself from the mess of limbs and navigates his way to the other's side.
He receives no acknowledgement spare for a glance of contempt in his direction. Nonetheless, Yifan plops himself down beside the other, accidentally brushing against the other's nose only to recoil when he finds it to be dry and freezing. He grumbles something along the lines of 'it was too hot' under his breath and the other glances in his direction once before looking at the pile of wolves warming each other up. Kyungsoo scoffs and then shifts slightly to accommodate Yifan's presence.
Yifan molds his body to the shape of Kyungsoo's, curling around the smaller frame while carefully steering clear of the injured leg. He can detect the heat radiating off the younger's body and buried his nose into the other's mane, inhaling the last traces of the sun mingled with pine and soil. Kyungsoo curls into himself a bit more before allowing his back to press into the body behind him, expanding the point of contact until fur coats seem to become one.
As he's about to fall asleep to Kyungsoo's sleeping pattern, recalls Chanyeol's constant requests to migrate to a warmer climate. It is tempting. But as long as these arrangements are present, where contact is secretive and hidden in stolen moments, he finds it hard to leave. As long as they don't speak about it, it isn't true. Yifan's head settles on top of Kyungsoo's neck, shifting left and right as gently as he can manage until he can find a comfortable spot to rest his head.
All it takes it takes is one step at a time.
More notes: debating on whether or not there should be an epilogue in which the members wake up to find them snuggling with one another. Idk.
