If It Comes Back

I’m the question that you refuse to answer
The spiteful splinter that twists in your side
You’re able to pass me off with just a wave
Yet for some unknown reason I cannot seem to hide
But I just play through the day as if it’s all right
That you don’t bother me when others pass by
When I receive a smile and am asked to dance
But you haunt me even from the recesses of my mind
I wish I could just smash it all up again and
Let everything slip back and become so numb
Whenever I get far enough away from your voice
I find myself slipping and end up falling down
You push me back into the shadows for keeps
Knowing the ways that you hurt me without waver
Breaking the ice yet building up the stone
As if it’s just my pain you’ve wanted to savor
Everything’s spinning out of my sphere of control
And the hands are pulling out of my grasp
All my shadows keep on changing ahead of me
To pull me forward out of the past
They’re sealing up the wounds that won’t heal
And kissing away my lingering fever
I’m praying to God to pull you out of my heart
Praying that He won’t let you in any deeper
I don’t remember how I got this way
Or how it was that I let you get this close
All I know is that I want to break away
Because you can’t offer me any sense of repose
I’ll hold to what they’ve always said before
But there is one thing that I want you to know
As I sit here writing out this apology to you
It’s because I love you that I have to let you go
