Taemin, for the longest time, was the maknae and resident noona-bait of the K-pop industry. He wasn't even 15 when he debuted. He's had the cute image associated with him ever since, regardless of how much he and the rest of SHINee tries to shed it off with his daring styles during their promotions since 2010. That's why people, like the MC's, find it so amusing that the baby is now a legit sunbae.
He gets a lot of attention in variety shows for being cute and the dancing machine, but yeah, I feel like he has a spacy, snarky, bratty side to him (like Kai) that the public/fans only get flashes of rarely. And having debuted so young, and with hardly any other boys his age, he's been quite a loner. Back in 2009, he was even reported be experiencing bullying in his new high school. Other SHINee members have famous friendships with other idols, yet Taemin was never reported for any friendships because he keeps to himself most of the time. That's why a lot of K-pop fans are happy that Kai and the rest of EXO debuted. Taemin only really started interacting and having fun with sunbaes like Yunho, Heechul, etc. in SM Town concerts just last year. It's nice that he gets to have fun with people his age like Tao, Kai, and Sehun now. :)
I think the reason why Taemin has the problem with shedding the cute image has to do more with the fact that he has the mentality of a five year old. lol His flower boy good looks certainly don't help his case.
To add to your essay... Taemin reveals his snarky side every once in a while, especially around people he's close with, like the rest of SHINee. (You'll often hear Key complain about Taemin's "rebellious" side. lol) He can act like a brat sometimes since he began training and made his debut at such a young age. His hyungs pay close attention to him because he's the baby of SHINee and spoil him a lot. Even his bratty side is kind of endearing though since all his antics are pretty childish and it's like a kitten pretending to be a lion.
Just going by my first impressions of him, I'm not surprised by anything you said. His expression seems like that of a detached person. Not unfriendly, just that his eyes don't smile much.
