Dropping in

One late december night, there was a groaning and wheezing in the Torchwood hub and a blue box appeared near the entrance. It sat there silently humming in the dim light, while it's occupant dashed about the mushroom shaped console in an attempt to start its refuelling sequence ( Read more... )

The Rift machine was indeed, one of the most amazing pieces of machinery he had ever scene. Well, perhaps his people would have come up with something more glitzy, but this was a awe inspiring hodgepodge of bits and different technology or varying advancement strewn together in one brilliant piece of mismatched high tech jiggery pokery.

It made him more than just a little giddy and the Doctor couldn't help but poke his head into the wires and clockwork gears and advance microchip machinery of the rift machine and inspect the array of advance computer displays at Tosh's station. He pulled on his glasses and whistled. "Fantastic! Why this is a magnificient piece of jiggery pokery. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. You're Tosh had a an advance understanding of sub-temporaltransindimentionalism! Very, very before her time!"

Jack stood back and let the Doctor become enraptured with the Rift Manipulator. Just as long as the Doctor didn’t touch something. And he was pretty sure the Doctor wasn’t that stupid. He, of all people, who had told Jackie Tyler she could stand in the TARDIS, as long as she didn’t touch anything? No, he trusted the Doctor very much. The would wager that the Doctor could probably put his nose right up to something and still have enough room that he wasn’t actually touching it. Plus, Jack would always agree. It’s better to get yourself right in the middle of things when you want to learn something.

He smiled. “Yes. Well… Tosh was very bright. I stole her from UNIT. And it ran in her family a bit. She was a brilliant mind. A genius at its finest. This was all made from her and things found around here. Well, mostly here. Space junk, flotsam and jetsam that flies through the Rift.”

Jack raised an eyebrow. “You going to keep your head stuck in there for long or did you want to actually do something?”

"You stole her from UNIT? Well good for you, UNIT, some brilliant people there, bit found of guns, but brilliant..." He thought of Martha and grinned.

He rubbed the back of his head as he pulled himself from the computer station. "Well, yes, I do get a bit carried away. Do something? Brilliant idea. I am a do something kind of fellow. So, what can we do? I do like doing things...."

Jack smirked. "Well, I borrowed her. She keeps saying that this is all temporary. You know? That she'll be going back. And yet, she hasn't." He reached up and tugged a bit on his braces. "She likes it here too much. I'm sure she'll stay. Or a man can hope." He winked at the Doctor. "I have a way with Martha."

Jack reached out and gently touched the Doctor's shoulder. "Let's go on an adventure. You have a time machine, after all. Should be able to return to the same time we left from. A bit of exploring might do us both some good."

The Doctor missed Martha, but he was very proud of her. She would make a good addition to Torchwood, and he would like to work with her again. "Well, one can never get too much of Martha Jones."

It was very tempting, the Doctor wanted nothing more than to take off with Jack in his TARDIS and explore the universe. And Jack was right, they could return the moment they arrived.

It didn't take long to consider. "Right then, an adventure! To the TARDIS! Anything in particular in mind?"

Perhaps they both needed something different before they returned to their lives? Well, did it matter. They needed each other and the Doctor was content with just that.

Jack grinned. “There is never too much Martha Jones. I’d ask her to join us, but she is off visiting Tom. How dare she have a boyfriend when I’m here?” He winked at the Doctor. He was teasing. He was glad that she had a life outside of Torchwood. Like Gwen. He wished Ianto had more of a life outside Torchwood too, but wouldn’t force the issue with the young man. What they all did was a hard job. It wasn’t an easy life. Having people outside of work made it a little less hard.

“An adventure!” He reached over and clapped the Doctor on the back of his shoulder, keeping the hand there. “You tell me, Doc? There are plenty of worlds out there. There must be one you haven’t visited in a while?”

Jack waggled his eyebrows at the Doctor. Just the prospect of going out with him was appealing. It was tempting to go and do nothing. And they both needed it. He knew that. And he knew that the Doctor knew it too. This would be good for them. And he would return to the others. He had to. “C’mon… Let’s go have some fun,” he murmured.

The Doctor remembered the engagement ring and how Martha briefly mentioned Tom. "Well, yes, lucky fellow that one. Martha will keep him on his toes."

The prospect of an adventure, any kind of adventure excited him. The Doctor beamed, well he had many ideas for places, anything from the eye of Orion, to the Market places at Greshack. Anything really, he knew they'd find trouble, adventure was always around the corner. "Well, yes, plenty of them, perhaps we should be random? I haven't used the TARDIS's Randomizer in quite some time, and the outcome is always a pleasant surprise." As he spoke and claped Jack's hand and started to lead him to the TARDIS.

Jack smirked as he walked with the Doctor. Jack lifted his arm and draped it around the Doctor's shoulders. "Well, Martha wants to be with Tom. That is her choice." He laughed. "She should just realize how much she loves me and be done with it, but she never will. Poor, poor woman."

He couldn't help but be happy. It wasn't that he didn't love his team or Cardiff, but sometimes you just had to get away. He did at least write a note for Gwen and Ianto. 'The Doctor needs me. I *will* be back.' Then, he let the Doctor lead him to the TARDIS. Once inside, he let go of the Doctor and gently caressed her console.

"Random. Let's go for Random. Lead on, Doctor."

"Random, I can do random!" The Doctor moved about the console, "all I need to do is set the coordinate randomer. I haven't used this since I was running from the black guardian, and my own people. "

The TARDIS hummed as Jack caressed the console. The Doctor paused for a moment. "Saying hello?" It was a gentle tease, the truth was, the Doctor himself was always caressing the console.

"Of course!"

Jack tossed off his jacket and draped it by the door to the TARDIS. He leaned over the console and focused on her for a moment, sort of nodding his head to the Doctor. He didn't speak. He didn't have to. He missed the TARDIS. After the last time with the Daleks, it seemed as if she had finally forgiven him. And that meant more to Jack than anything else.

He looked up at the Doctor. "Black Guardian. You get around, Doctor." He moved over to stand beside him, raising an eyebrow. "Well, let's go. What's taking you so long, pokey."

"Pokey? Me pokey?" He flipped the randomizer and grabbed the console as the TARDIS started to quake. "I'm savoring the moment. And yes, Black Guardian I did an errand for the Guardians quite some time ago, and decided to do it my way. It didn't make him bad reputation for myself, can't imagine why, I'm only helping."

The TARDIS started to shake and Jack was thrown a little. Moving away from the Doctor, he grabbed the console and hung on for dear life. If this was the Doctor savoring the moment, he wished he'd gotten on with it already. So the randomizer takes us and we have no clue where we're going, Jack thought to himself. He tried not to laugh at it. This was how they got into trouble.

"Your idea of help others think of as getting into trouble." He smirked up at the Doctor, raising an eyebrow. "Me? I like trouble. I say bring it on.,"

"That's what I love about you Jack! Always up for an adventure!" It made traveling very fun to do it with someone who enjoyed the excitement as much as he did.

The TARDIS console whirled up and down, and slowly the rocking settled.

Jack wandered over to stand next to the Doctor as the TARDIS landed. Looking at the monitor, he wondered just where they had landed. Now, they could have looked it up on the screen and found out that way, but Jack was more the adventure type. Grabbing his jacket, he patted the TARDIS console and opened the door, wandering outside.

His eyes widened. They were in London. He recognized that much. The TARDIS had landed on a little side street behind Carnaby St. He could tell by the people walking past and the music that this was the swinging sixties.

"Nice."

The Doctor joined Jack and looked around brightly. "Excellent, the 60s, the Beatles, the space race, and Woodstock!" He grinned and rubbed his hands together. "Well then, lets find a nice club and do some swinging?"

Jack looked around. "I remember the sixties. I had a lot of fun." He looked over at the Doctor, raising an eyebrow at him. "Just keep an eye out for me. Don't want to run into myself. Wibbly Wobbly, remember?" He licked his lips and rubbed his hands in anticipation. He had done a lot of fun things in the Sixties. It had reminded him a little of the 51st century, if just a bit more colourful.

He looked over at the Doctor again, blinking and staring at him. "You? You swing?!" He just couldn't resist himself. It was too easy. "And Doctor, I thought you were asexual."
