Firefly Fic: INTERREGNUM Simon/Kaylee, NC-17

Aug 23, 2007 21:57

Yeah, you read that right. Written for the talkcrazy kinkficathon, for biggrstaffbunch who wanted bondage, and "please don't make Kaylee a stupid hick or some sort of perpetually giggly sex machine"--I hope in this fic she appears as at least somewhat thoughtful and reflective.

This is terrific! I am inspired by how dorky-goofyness is not incompatible with sexiness. And my kink seems to be real people having real sex that matters in unpredictable ways even if it's just sex or maybe it's not but you never really know ahead of time and isn't it nifty how sex and the people you have it with can keep surprising you even when you think you know it all. Which must mean that's somebody's squick and they'll complain about how you didn't warn them, or just say "Euwww!"

Your Kaylee really works for me, which is actually no mean feat -- I could go with a broad range of characterizations for the rest of the Firefly crew, but I have very rigid ideas about what counts as IC vs. OOC for Kaylee and you hit the sweet spot.

But enough about me -- wonderful job, lovely story!

Beaucoup merci, cryptoxin! There's a headline in the paper today about "underpriced" $100 million mansions, I'm sure we're on track for a drabble with a 200-word warning.

I'd love to hear more about your ideas about Kaylee characterization--I adore prehistoric_sea's journal among other things because it has generated some great characterization discussions.

I'll look for those characterization discussion -- I don't have any great insights into Kaylee, I just think it would be easy to get her wrong (hence the admonishment/stipulation from bggrstaffbunch that you quote up top).

It's not even that Kaylee is my favorite Firefly character, and she didn't really start to click for me until a few episodes into the show. But that once she clicked, I had the feeling that I knew exactly who she was -- I think it's a combination of the writing and the actor's performance. I never got that feeling about Inara, for example, though in general she was more interesting to me than Kaylee. Jayne has a very recognizable voice, but I'm not sure I entirely "get" the character; same with River. Which probably has a lot to do with canon interruptus.

If I did the meme that includes "character that everyone else loves that you don't" it would have to be Kaylee (and Vila, for B7, which is why I paired them in crossovers). I think a lot of the trouble with Inara is that I don't find Morena Baccarin very charismatic (although she definitely looks right for the role), and anyway a perfect depiction of Inara would be someone whose stock in trade is appealing to demographic groups I don't belong to!

My favorite thing about this is how real the sex feels to me--they joke with each other, they're incredibly playful. I like that very much. The mixture of humorous and really hot works very well here.

thank you, lunabee34. I don't like either Jayne/Simon or Simon/Kaylee as heavy, Significant, epochal ships but in either case, it's easy to convince me that some enjoyable casual sexing would go on.

Lovely! Some of Simon's dialogue, and some of Kaylee's, is just totally inspired . . .

Many thanks! As Gutman says in "The Maltese Falcon," "Egad, sir, I like to talk to a man who likes to talk" and Kaylee and Simon are both voluble (one more elliptically than the other) so they provide a lot of dialogue for the writer's inner ear.

Wonderful, hot and fun and brilliant dialogue as always.

Thank you! Writing fic has certainly brought out my inner playwright--my inner painter, not so much.

glad you liked it, prehistoric_sea. Certainly S/K isn't a relationship that I devote a lot of writing time to *spontaneously*.

Re ghost stories: in one of my B7 stories Avon says that he likes kinky sex because it allows him to eroticize waiting and being frightened, two things that he has a LOT of in everyday life. And, not dissimilarly, in this story Simon and Kaylee can give each other what they happen to want at the time, which isn't all that much. And they like each other enough not to want to deceive the other about anything important.
