So over the last couple days I've been using the Alpha release of ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty jackalope) and I must say I'm impressed. No it doesn't have some amazing new feature everyone must have, what it has is stability. I think this comes largely from the new debian and the new gnome. Given upstream contributions I'm using an alpha with less issues than windows XP sp3. I mean really M$ winXP is 8 years old and I still have issues when I try and make it secure. why can't it be secure and play well with others at the same time??
Now to counter all the linux complaints and the I told you soes. when I used Ubuntu the first time in '06 it didn't do everything I wanted with less tweaking than windows. The wireless in samantha's laptop had major issues, thanks broadcom way to support your product, and some audio issues with her integrated USB sound. however with each passing year I have watched huge bounds in usability and with 8.04/8.10 it started to really come in line with windows. The catch was in several places speed and stability were lost. This release seems to bring polish to a lot of the features, some minor changes to the display, and huge under the hood stability fixes. These give me hope for another cycle of vast improvements.
On another note. Life is chaos and I need to not be avoidant of my feelings as they arise. I don't like dealing with them though and right now I have other things to do (like studying which I'm obviously not doing on LJ). so feelings later study now. hope everyone is alive and well. hopefully I'll find time over the next week to hang out with some of you.
