Twili Magic, Physics and Quantum Mechanics, or: "Studying Science Is Why I Can't Have Nice Things"
OKAY KIDS, AUNTY MIDNA-MUN IS ABOUT TO TALK NERDY TO YOU. SHE'S GONNA TALK NERDY TO YOU ALL NIGHT LONG.
THAT'S RIGHT: LET'S TALK ABOUT SCIENCE. You might have heard of a little thingy called quantum mehanics.
Or you might not have. Pay attention, this is important. Consider this: "we exist in a sea of energy" (this I leave in quotations, because I can't take credit for this illustration. it's a great way to picture it). And this energy exists as waves, because that's how matter rolls.
"That's nice, but hey," you might be wondering, "what the hell does this have to do with magic?"
Well, in order to rationalize the mechanics of twili magic, that's how I've opted to explain the damn thing. It's a manipulation of a type of physical energy. Knowing your physics helps knowing just what she's doing. Knowing your physics helps to make some sense of just how she can do ludicrous things to her own personal state of matter as well of that of others (ie, pass through solid objects, float, warp things, phase into shadows). It's like a fancy phase change. Higher energy, less cohesive state of matter. Manipulating energy also allows her to do things like project bolts of energy (like breaking the wolf's chain), create self-contained fields of "dark energy" (the "dark energy" attack), and store objects in the proverbial hammerspace (like the curse crystal. she's really just ripped a tiny pocket in the matter of the universe. surely, somewhere on Saturn there lies a pile of Link's equipment, as dumped there by Midna when not in use).
Because her magic is literally a way of manipulating energy, she can do the above but cannot perform any sort of healing magic, or cloaking magic. Or anything like that. Otherwise, it's fairly versatile.
Not realllllly accurate, and not really rigidly adherent to science, but it hopefully works as a good guideline for keeping her magic use logical, and it hopefully makes some sense of what she can and cannot do.
