here i am, coming to you live from the futon andy and i sleep on, on a wednesday afternoon. this is the first sick day i've taken from my current job; i've actually been kind of unclear on the temp agency's sick day policy, and if i had been at all functional this morning i probably would have gone to work.
yesterday, for most of the day, i pretty much felt like an alien had laid eggs in my abdomen. it was not a fun time. fortunately there was no one else in the bathroom when i had to run in there and dispose of my delicious lunch (i was sad to see it go). i didn't mention this to anyone, though (not even jesse), because i knew they would just tell me to go home, and i didn't want to go home, because after work i was meeting
cherryzareyummy for ben folds at the house of blues.
we decided to park at alewife and take the T in, which in retrospect was a great idea, because due to the concurrent sox-yankees game the kenmore/fenway area was choked with ben folds fans AND red sox fans, and trying to park anywhere near there probably would have been expensive and/or impossible. we did not, however, decide to get any dinner, because the smell of polish sausages on lansdowne street made my nausea worse, and alicia was pretty sure they would be way overpriced anyway.
once at the house of blues we discovered that i had accidentally bought a ticket for the floor while alicia had bought one for the upper mezzanine, but one of the ticket-takers let us both go upstairs. this was nice, as it was a little less insanely crowded up there, it wasn't ear-shatteringly loud, and the view wasn't too bad. be forewarned, though: if you can't afford anything better than general admission at the house of blues, they will not let you sit down. anywhere. not even on the floor. not even if you've had the equivalent of one meal that day and have been on your feet for several hours, and your blood pressure is dangerously low. i didn't pass out, though, which we considered a victory. overall i think i actually had a better time leaning on that railing than i did when
insanexflame and i went to see othello in london, but that was probably due to the awesomeness of ben folds.
and he was awesome. his opening act was also pretty cool, but once he took the stage i could feel the alien babies in my abdomen starting to chill out. when alicia and i saw him in 2005 he was touring for songs for silverman and he had a drummer and bassist with him, but this time it was literally just him and a piano (the tickets said as much). and it was SO GREAT. he really incorporated the audience a lot - he did three separate songs that involved audience harmony (army, not the same, and one other that i am having a hard time remembering for some reason), and a lot of the time he would sing his own harmonies over all of us singing along. actually, here is the setlist, which i stole from
setlist.fm:
Free Coffee - somebody threw a bag of coffee beans up onstage after this one.
Annie Waits
Sentimental Guy
Boxing - i left
doubtful_salmon a voicemail of this for her birthday.
Effington - if he was only going to play three songs from way to normal i'm glad this was one of them.
Still Fighting It
Narcolepsy
All U Can Eat
Gone
Levi Johnston's Blues - this is awesome. and unreleased, i guess? basically it's about that guy who knocked up bristol palin. nick hornby wrote the text.
You Don't Know Me - kate miller-heideke (the opening act) sang regina spektor's part on this one. her guitarist had apparently just come from the bathroom after eating some bad food, so ben made up a song about constipation for him.
Landed
The Secret Life of Morgan Davis
Bastard
Zak and Sara
Kate
You Got To Take Sick And Die Some Of These Days (Muddy Waters cover) - ben wanted to play a blues song since he was at the house of blues.
Rockin' the Suburbs - the "you better watch out because i'm gonna say 'fuck'" part was epic.
Philosophy - he didn't throw the stool! i guess the HOB wouldn't let him?

i think it actually sounded better from up in the mezzanine. my mind was a little bit blown.
so then alicia and i stumbled back to the T, and into the parking garage, and somehow i managed to stay awake all the way home. when i went to bed it was 1:00 a.m. and i felt like shit. knowing that i had to get up in 4.5 hours, i had a feeling today was not going to happen.
this is nice, though. andy doesn't have class on wednesdays so he's around (he made me toast), and i'm just chillin' in my PJs, trying to eat some food and become fully operative again. ahhhhh.
