so, originally i was going to come home from massachusetts saturday night. then susan talked me into leaving on sunday (she didn't have to try very hard).
then,
there was united airlines.
my flight from boston to san francisco was only delayed by about five minutes, but when i got to my connecting gate at SFO, my 10:55 pm flight to monterey had been moved to 12:17 am. as i sat at the gate, i learned that several earlier flights to monterey had been having difficulty landing and had turned around and come back to san francisco.
so it was no surprise when, at midnight, the gate agent announced that our flight was cancelled. we were offered a complimentary hotel stay and rebooking. if i were four years older i could have rented a car and driven myself home, like many of the other passengers did, but i didn't want to spend the money, and it wasn't like i had anywhere to be today.
so i took them up on the hotel, after repeatedly declining some military guy's offers to spend the night in the USO lounge. as it turns out, united gave me a wicked swanky room at the marriott SFO, with a ridiculously enormous bed, a flat-screen TV, and marvelously scented bath products. there was no complimentary breakfast or evening cookie like at the trusty rusty best western jamaica in new york, but the enormous lobby and seventh-floor view (albeit of the repo depot across the street) made up for it.
however, when i got back to the airport this morning, i found that my 12:14 pm flight was delayed to 1:06 pm, and after i got back to monterey at 2:00 i had to wait until 4:30 for dad to come get me. you can't blame someone for not picking you up in a timely manner when their delay is due to patients with failing kidneys, though. and as i said, it's not like i had anywhere to be.
so basically i got from san francisco to monterey in 19 hours, a journey which should have taken 45 minutes. one could argue that i and the other passengers brought this upon ourselves for buying tickets for such a short flight in the first place, but that is neither here nor there.
then i got home and discovered that my cousin and grandmother would really really like to get together tomorrow, which will involve 6 or 7 hours of driving. my parents are wary of this plan, but i'm actually looking forward to it, although tomorrow is the first day of enforcement of california's new hands-free cell phone driving law, and i don't actually own a headset/car with bluetooth/clippy ear thing that reminds me of multiple episodes of doctor who. hmmm.
also, some rachel-style equations, as borrowed from
insanexflame:
massachusetts = muggy
muggy = mosquitoes
mosquitoes + sarah = itchy
mosquitoes + bottom of sarah's foot = VERY ITCHY
