why would someone casually leaf through a dictionary in a barber shop? Seems like such an odd reference, lol.

This is just my personal interpretation, but I think it was meant as though "Casually, as someone might (leaf though a magazine, something) in a barber shop." Just a guess, but it helps me swallow that line. :]

That's a good interpretation! It just confused me because the next line refers to a sanctuary. Is it still talking about dictionaries? I have no idea and it feels like the poet is being obtuse or not expressing themselves clearly. Or maybe, I just don't get it!

I admit to an entirely selfish interest in the poem, as my name begins with S and I used to casually read the dictionary when I was much younger.
