I like the evocation of sentience on the part of the woman cleaning the ashtrays -- she is written about and observed by the narrator, but isn't reduced to an object in the telling. I was afraid the bird metaphors would reduce her but I don't think they have.
I really like this. This is the kind of awesome poem where I can't describe what exactly I like so much because I'm not a poet and am rather poetry-stupid actually. But it is quite imagery-y and evocative.
