“The Benefits of Ignorance”
Hal Sirowitz
If ignorance is bliss, Father said,
shouldn't you be looking blissful?
You should check to see if you have
the right kind of ignorance. If you're
not getting the benefits that most people
get from acting stupid, then you should
go back to what you always were-
being too smart for your own good.
At my school, there is a poetry society which meets every Thursday morning to read and discuss poetry. I was really excited when I went for the first time the Thursday before break, but in between the poems it was silent. All five of us read a poem, but we sat for about ten minutes in silence. I read Don Marquis's "lesson of the moth" and Katharyn Machan's "Hazel Tells Laverne". I tried to stimulate discussion, but it did not work. Tomorrow M and I are going to go shake things up. Any suggestions as to which poem I should bring and what questions I should bring up? I would very much appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
