Oishi Sushi

A little under a month ago I was told that competition was coming to Burien to go against Sushi Maki. On October 6th I notice this sign:

Click for a bigger picture.

When I took this picture there was a lot of debris on the ground, and it just looked like they were far away from being up and running. So I was really surprised that they are up and running by now. During my lunch I asked my waitress how long they've been opened and she said that they have only been opened since Friday. So naturally there is no Yelp page yet but if there is one I will update this page with one. Edit 11/09/2014: Here is the yelp page.

My co-worker, Nancy, told me that this place was many different restaurants before. If my many she actually means two then sure! Well I only see evidence of two but maybe she's counting the current iteration as well.

It's first incarnation I know well is as Veracruz Mexican Restaurant, a place I always drive by and never bothered to visit. I'm sorry! There's just too many cuisines to try out and too many restaurants associated with those cuisines! I usually go for Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese when I think about going out to eat. Hayley is right, I'm such a food racist!

Ahem! Anyway Veracruz has been in business for 31 years before posting it's restaurant for sale on Cragislist no less according to the B-Town Blog. I think then the new owners took over and gave it a face lift.

Finally, before it became Oishi Sushi, it was another Mexican Restaurant called El Jalapeno Feliz. This is the first time I'm going to say this but I don't think you should click on that link. All it is is a Facebook account that has a sign of the restaurant and a bunch of ads for events they have held. Nothing to see here folks.

Here is what the Oishi Sushi storefront looks like:

Here is what their hours are:

They also accept American Express!

And this is what the inside looks like:

And this is what their menu looks like (yes I'm going to post the whole menu):

That's gotta be the longest string of pictures I've ever posted w/o text.

Looking over their menu I chose 3 items that best compare and contrast the unique offerings of Sushi Oishi and Sushi Maki.

However, before my main dish came out, I got a complimentary Miso Soup:

Unlike Sushi Maki these include tofu chunks.

I thought the overall flavor was pretty good. It is a different flavor to that of Sushi Maki so I think in this instance it's not fair to compare the two. You will not be upset with either offerings of Miso Soup.

Here is their daily Bento Box offering which was supposed to have Spicy Salmon Roll, Grilled Teriyaki Chicken skewers over rice, Handmade Gyoza, Spring Rolls, and a Salad. Since they just opened they don't have some of the things. The Spicy Salmon Roll was replaced w/ a regular California Roll, the Chicken Teriyaki is not skewered, and there are no Spring Rolls to speak of.

Why is the typical Bento Box like this? Makes me wonder if this is an Americanized version.

When it comes to the California Roll Sushi Maki wins out because their roll taste better and it is also bigger as well.

Oishi Sushi's Teriyaki Chicken was a little bit overcooked and some of it was tough. Not so much that it ruins it but just enough for me to notice it and give it a ding.

The Gyoza was pretty good and I would order it again on an individual bases. It didn't come w/ Gyzoa (Ponzu) sauce like I'm used to but the flavor was good enough that I didn't miss it.

Although I like the flavor of the salad I still hate the generic version of using the basic leaf lettuce instead of using more nutrient packed version like baby greens and the such. The dressing has some kind of weird pink specks that I have no idea what they were. This makes me have no idea what kind of dressing this was. It's not ranch dressing. Hmmmm.

The first roll that comes out was the Spider Roll:

Soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado, tempura asparagus(?).

I still can't really believe that there is tempura asparagus in there but maybe that's the reason why it has a unique taste to it. Still the winner in this instance goes to Sushi Maki because not only is their's bigger, but because it has the added Krab (Salad), Kanpyo, Carrots; Sushi Maki's Spider Roll has more flavor to it making it worth the $10.95 compared to Sushi Oishi's $9.

The last roll to come out is Oishi Sushi House Roll:

Snow Krab, scallop, cucumber, seaweed salad; topped w/ super white tuna (escolar), fresh mango, & special (sweet chili) sauce.

So I just looked up what Super White Tuna is; this is the first time I've ever seen this on any menu, according to Wikipedia it is also known as Escolar. Apparently I need to be careful eating this because it can cause "explosive, oily, orange diarrhea." What? Why am I paying almost two more dollars than Sushi Maki's highest offerings for this roll again??? I haven't had any problems yet so that's promising.

I'm still trying to figure out why this roll is so expensive. The filling has scalaops, sure, but it also has something cheaper than Krab (Salad) which is Seaweed Salad. I guess it's because it has the Krab as well as the Seaweed Salad? And as I've said the special sauce is nothing more than sweet chili sauce. Don't get me wrong, the roll is pretty damn good. Is it $12 good? Eh, not really.

Here is my final bill:

With tip it comes out to $40

Overall I would rather eat at Sushi Maki then eat here. Cheaper rolls that offer more and taste better? Sounds like a no brainier to me!
