Stupid physics review books...
part of a problem: find the maximum height of an object whose vertical position is described by the function y(t)=1/2t^2-4t
a) 0 s
b) (8)^1/2 s
c) 4 s
d) (2)^1/2 s
e) 2 s
ok... piece of cake
1) d/dt[1/2t^2-4t] = t-4
2) sign chart
--|--
- 4 +
wtf
3) second derivative test: d/dt[t-4] = +1
WTF
*checks back of book*
their explanation:
"The answer is C. The maximum y-coordinate occurs when Vy=0.
Vy = d/dt[1/2t^2 - 4t] = t-4
0 = t-4 -> t=4 s"
Idiots, maximum my ass. Way to correctly teach calculus.
In other news, i'm going to fail both the ap physics and ap chem tests. huzzah?
