This whole zombie theme....

I rabidly read zombie!fic whenever I find it, which I at first attributed my enjoyment of darkfic, but I think it goes beyond that.  I've been thinking about it and zombies should be the least fascinating horror theme.  How much complexity can there be with mindless walking dead?  But the zombie movies keep rolling, I see that there is now a TV series about zombies, and I keep reading.  Zombies are about sixteen times more frightening in fic than they are in movies, which I attribute to the fact that I'm not distracted by special effects and that mindless gaze.  Of course I am also deficient in mental visualization, being an auditory learner and having no talent for art or engineering or putting things together, not to mention that I have an anxiety attack whenever I have to use an escalator, because I can't match the movement of the stairs to my eyes...anyway, digressing.  All I can figure is that the zombies are a manifestation of our fears about the constantly shaky state of the world.  I have a friend whose nightmares all involve zombies, which she attributes to this idea of people mindlessly following a crowd or an ideology, which is as fascinating as it is disconcerting.

Anyway...thoughts?  ones that are perhaps more articulate than mine?  Please share.
