So I'm starting to think Judaism is the new "it" religion. Between the Kabbalah craze that has led celebs like Madonna and Britney to keep kosher and celebrate Jewish holidays and the intro of Hebrew and Yiddish words in to every day slang, and the countless popular TV shows with Jewish characters (hello OC) Jew-wannabes seem to be popping up everywhere.
As fabulous as it is that Judaism is being celebrated instead of attacked and scorned as it has been throughout history, at the same time I have to say I'm really not enjoying the bastardization of my religion.
For example, tonight alone I encountered two people who used the word "kosher" as slang. They used it to mean ok or acceptable or good, which was obvious enough. Just one problem: THAT'S NOT WHAT THE WORD MEANS. Food that is kosher has been supervised by a certified religious official who ensures that it is in keeping with Jewish dietary laws. So please I beg you, next time you go to say "That's not kosher"
stop and replace kosher with my definition and see if your sentence still makes sense. In fact if you're going to use any "Jewish" words make sure you know what you're saying and how to say them. It's pronounced sh-pe-eel not spe-eel...
That's my little public service announcement/rant.
