Summary: In a new city, Will evaluates his current situation.
The divorce was final. Will could wrap his head around that fact just fine. Talia was better off without him, and he was better off without the accusatory looks and constant reminders of his infidelity.
He and Peter had decided that being the best of friends would work better than being in a romantic relationship. That's what he was still having trouble accepting. The man he'd left his wife for wasn't going to be the man with whom he'd grow old. How the hell had that happened? Oh yeah, he thought. I opened my big mouth and told him I didn't want to risk losing him as a friend if we started to hate each other as lovers. Brilliant.
Surrounded by boxes, sitting on the floor in his new living room, Will wondered if he'd ever get used to the idea of being alone. For the rest of your life. He shuddered at the thought and quickly got to his feet. There was a bottle of wine in the kitchen, and he'd decided he was going to wallow in his misery with the help of a nice merlot.
By the time the bottle was half empty, Will had begun to form a life plan. He was now in Seattle, thousands of miles from the city where he was born and raised. He was thousands of miles from his friends, his family and everything familiar. Eventually, he would make new friends and get to know his surroundings, but anyone he could love and grow to think of as family would be lost to him. He'd essentially doomed himself to a life of heartbreaking, aching loneliness by giving up Peter. Ruining his marriage would mean a future of nothing but misery when it came to relationships. He deserved it.
He eyed the bottle of wine and poured himself another glass. In a few more minutes, he wouldn't care about anything but crawling into his cold, empty bed and falling asleep curled up next to absolutely no one.
Raising his glass to the empty condo, he smiled sadly. "Welcome home."
Child of the wilderness
Born into emptiness
Learn to be lonely
Learn to find your way in darkness
Who will be there for you,
comfort and care for you?
Learn to be lonely
Learn to be your one companion
Never dreamed out in the world
There are arms to hold you
You've always known
Your heart was on its own
So laugh in your loneliness
Child of the wilderness
Learn to be lonely
Learn how to love life that is lived alone
Learn to be lonely
life can be lived
life can be loved
Alone.
