Berlin is fabulous. I'd forgotten what being in a big city was like, to be honest. I hate London (although it's just about bearable as a day trip from Sussex), and while I've had some good times in Glasgow, I've never spent extended periods of time there.

We went to a pub/squat/club venue yesterday and it was just brilliant because everyone was having fun (in our case, this might be because we weren't discussing probabilisitic models of transcription-factor binding site prediction anymore), a contrast compared to the UK, where many people seem to be out to neck as much booze as possible in minimal time. I like the more relaxed attitude to drinking, though half-litre cocktails seem like a rather lethal idea to me. The trains run all night and we stopped for food (doner kebab or felafel. My felafel were doughnut shaped, which apparently makes them fry with less oil) before going back. Our conference is in a hotel, kind of out of the city centre.

Oh, and there were loads of prostitutes on the street, which I've never seen before. They're always dressed in identical clothing- high-heeled boots, bare legs, pvc miniskirt and black satin corset. Somewhat bizarrely, the corset is always totally unlaced.

And we have pickled chilli peppers on offer in the breakfast buffet. And a yoghurt called 'Dickmilch'.
