Sexuality: Whoever can deal with him; right now he's involved with Sirius Black.
History: Remus was born to a muggle mother and wizard father. He is an only child. At the age of 5, his mother took him out for a walk during the full moon, and they were attacked by a werewolf. His mother was killed, but he managed to crawl into a storm drain and escape. The wolf did get a bite in as he scrambled off, leaving him with lycanthropy and a large scar on his lower right calf.
Remus' father mourned greatly for his wife and for his injured son, but he took care of Remus, locking him in a cage in the basement on full moons rather than turning him over to the Ministry.
Mr. Lupin contacted Dumbledore, who had been one of his teachers at Hogwarts, and arranged for Remus to go there. Dumbledore made many special modifications for Remus, including the Whomping Willow and the tunnel to the Shack. Remus' father died during his first year at school, and Albus became his paternal figure.
He and Pomfrey took care of Remus and hid his condition successfully, with the exception of an incident in 6th year with Severus Snape and Remus' best friends.
Remus was a prefect, and got decent marks. He excelled at DADA and proved to be quite bright in general, although he was a reserved boy and tended to ingratiate himself to others, overlooking their flaws in return for their friendship. As a child and teenager, he tried desperately to please people, feeling this was due in return for their tolerance of his 'condition'.
After the events of 1981, Remus was forced to go on without his friends, whom he had come to rely on. The apparent betrayal of Sirius Black and deaths of James, Lily, and Peter hit him hard. He struggled for several years, in constant poverty and loneliness, unwilling to risk becoming so close to people again. He remained pleasant and basically friendly, but over time Remus became more hardened and less likely to put up with other's faults. His continued fending for himself gave him a self-reliance he lacked in earlier years, and as an adult he is very particular about accepting help from others.
From 1981 to 1993, Remus worked in odd jobs, sometimes in the wizarding world, but more often in the muggle world. He rarely kept a job long for fear of hurting someone eventually, or because his monthly absences made him seem unreliable, causing him to lose many jobs. He is very familiar with muggle culture, as most of his work with them took the form of physical labor due to his enhanced strength, and he got to be casual friends with many co-workers on many short-term jobs. He is quite good at carpentry, fixing things, gardening, painting, or just about any semi-skilled form of maintenance or repair.
In 1993, Remus came to teach DADA at Hogwarts, but was exposed as a werewolf by Severus Snape before the term ended. He left peaceably, and has been doing small jobs for Dumbledore off and on since, and occasionally working odd jobs in the muggle world. Most of his time now is spent on Order business, both in research and the field.
Personality: Remus is generally friendly, smiling and nodding to people he meets in town or in the hallways. He is, on the surface, a typical man, not overly serious, yet not frivolous. His actual temperament is fairly stable. He can be quick to anger but also is quick to calm down. He is on the quiet side, preferring to listen more than talk.
He is not a formal person. Remus speaks plainly and bluntly, yet always tries to cushion his remarks with humor. He is somewhat self-absorbed, having come to the conclusion that he is the only person he can count on at all, with the possible exception of Albus Dumbledore. He is very protective of Albus, as he sees the man as a surrogate father. He doesn't handle criticism of Dumbledore well at all.
Remus tends to treat his enemies and friends very similarly. The difference is only internal. He speaks to friends in a polite way out of affection. He treats those he dislikes in a friendly way because he keeps his feelings and opinions close to his vest. He dislikes anyone really knowing where they stand with him. His humour tends to be more biting with those he doesn't care for, but it's not very distinguishable from the affectionate ribbing he gives to people he likes.
Remus abhors physical violence. He does get angry, but will only allow himself to express it verbally, and will leave a situation if his anger gets to the point where he feels he may seek a dangerous outlet. The lone exception he would make is for Peter Pettigrew, who he would beat severely if he got the chance. If Remus sees someone being subjected to violence, he will intervene and try to stop it. He realizes this is because he neglected to do so when he was younger, and figures it's better late than never.
Remus is quite slovenly and sloppy, tending to just leave things wherever, and not particularly caring if things are in their proper places. He gets nervous in environments that are overly neat and/or spotless. His clothes are frequently wrinkled, although his robes are no longer shabby and patched. He sometimes forgets to shave for a day or two, and his hair tends to be disheveled.
In a nutshell, Remus is a fairly serene, quiet, bookish man with a lot of self-control. He is free with physical affection with those he knows wish it from him, but very standoffish with everyone else physically, preferring to nod rather than shake hands. He has a dry wit and a quick yet mild temper, only getting very angry under extreme circumstances, and choosing to walk away on those rare occasions he deems it needed. His placidity and tendency to be apparently flippant about many subjects can strike people as an indication of absent-mindedness or even a lack of compassion, but any substantial amount of time spent with him will cure them of this misconception.
Appearance: Remus is 6'1" tall and slender. He has thick light brown hair, streaked a bit with gray. He tends to wear it in a disheveled, floppy style. Remus has hazel green eyes with gold flecks in them. They tend to get more gold near the full moon. Remus has a large scar from his wolf bite, and although it has faded, it is still quite noticeable. Remus has no other visible scars, as he heals very quickly from injury due to his fast metabolism.
