CNY Reunion Dinner

Feb 17, 2007 18:00

As I sit here and type, there are two dead birds on the kitchen table. Or to be more specific, a crispy, roasted duck; dressed with the freshest of vegetables and a chicken, steamed to perfection, topped with fried onions. And simmering in the cooking pot is pork cooked with oyster sauce, with a tasteful amount of fat. I had just tried the pork half an hour earlier, and I can still feel my arteries clogging. But of course, it was completely delicious.

In my grandmother's house, there is 'or' kuih, a sort of yam dish that goes beautifully with tomato sauce and 'tu dor' soup, a soup filled with tender pork (or at least, its stomach), brimming with button mushrooms with dashes of pepper. Of all the food that will probably be in the reunion tonight, I dread the 'yee sang' the most.

And it is undoubtedly one of the most symbolic part of the entire event.

After years of eating the cursed disgustingly sweet and sour thing that twinges in your mouth, I still have not gotten used to it. And worse, the sesame seeds (fertility) sprinkled all over it always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The disgustingly slimy/sticky/crunchy texture contributes to my hatred towards said dish.

Along with that, I have to sit down and play the good girl while the family members gush over at each other. Of course, all of them are nice people, really. It's just that whatever they seem to talk about either:
a) bore me to death
or
b) does not need my participation whatsoever.
And of course, my mother does not miss the oppurtinity to complain about my preoccupance with the computer despite the fact that my grades arn't that bad (yet).

I'm really in it for the food. And the fact that if I don't go, I'll be literally slaughtered by my parents.

Dinner tonight. I just can't wait.
