The name of Trakai was first mentioned in the Chronicle of Wigand of Marburg in 1337. In the Middle Ages Trakai became an important defensive centre during the fights against the Teutonic Knights.
The founding of a multinational ( Lithuanians, Karaims, Tatars, Jews, Rssians, Germans, Poles) town was facilitated by the Peninsula and Island Castles that were built in the 14th - 15th centuries by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania Kestutis and Vytautas the Great. Only some fragments of its walls have survived till nowadays.

The versatile historical and cultural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is preserved here.
