I am getting taken to task by some one for not having health insurance. She thinks either Adam or I should just go out and get a job - any job - that has health insurance and that state systems (Medicaid, Medicare, systems for children under 5) should really be going to battered women fleeing abuse. At first I was willing to debate, because sure, I see the sense in that. But then she starts on about how we (humans in general) can make different choices to afford certain things. And I'm thinking, how is capitulating to standard American 9-5 life actually a good choice? We keep our costs low by NOT commuting, by not needing paid childcare. We deliberately moved to a community where cost of living is low. Yeah, not having health insurance is not our long term plan. I see state aid programs as something that can assist those who need it - ME! MY FAMILY! I see these programs as short term boons to boost us when times are rough. She is veering ever so close to 'you are a drain on society/mooch' and I feel insulted.

She is childless and I really don't think she sees how much more complicated having kids makes things.
