I just made a reference elsewhere to a game I couldn't quite place but I knew it was 80's era, I'd played it on the Apple II series, and had a character with sort of spiky hair. Then I remembered the character name was Vandal and Google for apple ii vandal -hearts (there's some more recent game called Vandal Hearts apparently) led me to: Hard Hat Mack.
