"Shared secret" is the cryptographic term for a password -- it's something you can use for authentication because only you and someone else (the computer, your security alarm system) know it (as opposed to e.g. public key systems like RSA[1]).

Here are some evwhore shared secrets ( Read more... )

I used to joke with that if we ever got caught up in some sort of government kidnapping conspiracy scenario (we were both big X-Files fans)

i have absolutely had that kind of conversation with people. although it's more often "how to confirm identity over an untrusted channel" in general rather than "government kidnapping" in specific.

when i used to work with a guy i'd known since we were both in high school, the friend was teaching a training session for our group on how to use PGP, and when someone prompted him "how do you know that's really regis?" when discussing key signing, he looked at me and said two words, relating to a semi-shared secret dating back a decade before. i laughed uproariously, and he said "yeah, that's really her."

Too late. Oy. (Although this is fairly tame as hangovers go. I think I'll just go back to sleep and work it off that way.)

I would tell my closest friends (they probably all think it is a joke) that if I was ever wanted by the law, the mob, or needing to be on the run, you should look for me here first.

I need one of these...

I, too, was cab-driver drunk this weekend, also for the first time in quite a while. After sitting in my car for over an hour in bone-chilling cold to wait for some of the Maker's Mark to metabolize, I made the moronic decision to drive home. At several points, I had the cab-driver thought. I also was in the mood to make deals with the divine entity about not drinking for a while if she got me home without injuring myself or anyone else (or getting arrested). I carved an exception out of the deal for this weekend in Vegas. She seemed to understand, which I suppose makes her sort of like the SportsGal . . . understands that Vegas is somehow just different ( ... )
