They didn't give the origin of the team name. They only say how it changed when the team moved. Minnesota's motto is the L'Etoile du Nord and is also called the "North Star State". I'm pretty sure that motto comes from the influence of French trappers and traders in the great north woods which dates back to the 1600s.
They also didn't tell the whole story of the Blue Jackets name.
The real story (or at least the legend that everybody in the area knows) is that there was during the colonization of that part of Ohio, a white man was captured and started living with a Native American tribe, eventually rising up to be (I believe) their War Chief. His name was Blue Jacket (as that is what he was wearing when taken in.
It is certain that the people naming the team knew all about the person Blue Jacket. One can presume the only reason that it's not part of the 'official' story is that these days a lot of people don't look kindly upon Native American-based team names.
It seems like the old teams have better stories. I actually met a guy who registered the names "Colorado Avalanche" and "Denver Avalanche" when he heard the Nordique were coming because he thought those were three logical names. He claimed he got season tickets for life from the Avs to give them the rights.

Sure they did.
They only say how it changed when the team moved.
Which is how the Dallas Stars got their name.
If the question had been "How did the former Minnesota North Stars get their name" then I could see your point :-)
