[Brief] Synopsis: College!AU + Werewolf!AU. Changmin is a werewolf and Yunho just happens to relax in the same secluded area as he does.
Yunho's just a dance student in a department full of dance students. Having finally made it past the auditions that he's been attempting to pass for years, Yunho's a little more than awestruck as he wanders through the halls of the nation's most renowned arts university. He shoulders his bag and ploughs through the mass of students with steely determination - he didn't try this hard to make it into university just to slack off.
When he finally finds his classroom - 400D - he hesitates with fingers around the stainless steel handle. He can hear bass music seeping out through the crack under the door, thrumming deep and smooth. The long, rectangular window in the door gives him a view of the studio, and he sees a few dancers hanging out around the stereo. He's swallowing his nerves when he feels someone standing behind him.
"Hello," the stranger says. "Are you new to this class?"
"Yes," Yunho hurries to say. "I'm Yunho, it's a pleasure."
"Ah yes, I remember the addition to the attendance list. Hi Yunho, I'm your instructor. You may just call me BoA, all my students do."
"You're -"
"I am," BoA affirms, and gestures for Yunho to open the door with a wink. "Don't worry, they don't bite. Much."
Yunho stumbles out of class out of breath and with eight new friends in his pocket. He waves goodbye to BoA and turns the head down the hallway, fumbling in his bag for his bottle of water as he does so. He drains the bottle in one go, the cool liquid sliding down his throat like silk dancing across smooth skin. Sighing in contentment, Yunho stuffs the empty bottle back into his back and glances instinctively outside the windows that line the walls of the hallways.
The moon's just rising, and silvery light hits the manmade lake that's just right outside the Arts department. Yunho checks his watch - doors to the dorm don't lock for another three hours. He makes an impromptu decision to head over to the lake, just to see what it's like. He's got a soft spot for nature, not that he ever lets anyone find out. A hip-hop dancer's too cool for nature.
Yunho nearly trips over a branch that's half-hidden by overgrown grass - he catches himself out of pure dancer reflexes and half-hops, half-stumbles over to the bench before falling somewhat gracefully onto its wooden seat. Yunho coughs and shrugs off his bag before settling into a more comfortable position. The moonlight's reflecting off the calm surface of the lake in even refractions, and Yunho raises his eyes to meet the gaze of the half-moon.
It's pretty, Yunho thinks, how the moon shines with light that doesn't belong to it and how it passes the light down to other things that crave it. It's pretty how colours are muted and nothing seems to be moving. Yunho exhales and stretches his legs - they're still a little sore from class. He's drawing patterns in the dewy grass when he catches sight of movement in his peripheral vision. Across the lake, someone else is settling into an identical bench. But there's not enough light and the lake's too wide for Yunho to be able to make out the person's face. So he lets it go and returns to his art.
Changmin pauses for a second when he sees that someone else is seated by the lake. But he doesn't let it bother him and he walks just a little further to get to the other bench. He settles down and glances up at the moon - just a week till the full moon hits. Changmin sighs and reflexively glances across the lake.
He sees the stranger's eyes scrunch up as if he were trying to figure out Changmin's features. It takes a second for Changmin to realize that the stranger's human; humans don't have his eyesight. Changmin scoffs slightly and looks away, but it's not long before he looks back out of curiosity.
Changmin's been to the lake everyday since freshman year, and this is the first time anyone's joined him. It would be a lie if he said he weren't curious as to why this person's appeared at the lake out of nowhere. But Changmin doesn't approach the stranger - Changmin doesn't like approaching anyone at all.
Yunho yawns and lifts his super-sized cup of coffee to his lips. He had spent way too much time at the lake last night, more than he had intended, and by the time he got back to the dorms, he was locked out. Too scared to wake the dean up - he's new! - Yunho spent the night in the library, hunched over his backpack which he used as a makeshift pillow. Dashing back to his dorm for a quick shower and a change, he's just managed to pick up coffee and be on his way with an estimate of being at class - thankfully - on time.
Surprisingly, he's the first one to arrive. BoA's already there, sweatpants swimming around her feet as she fiddles with the huge sound system in the corner. Yunho sets his bag down by the mirror and chugs the rest of his coffee down before tossing it aside and ambling over to BoA.
"Morning," Yunho says cheerily. BoA waves, but doesn't look up.
"Are you good with these things?" BoA asks, "I can't get it to work!"
"Here," Yunho offers, "I'll try."
BoA puffs her fringe out of her face and straightens. Yunho crouches and bends over the stereo to flip the switch - the system turns on and music blasts obnoxiously out of the speakers. BoA blinks.
"Well."
Yunho grins. The door to the studio swings open and the other students file in. Yunho and BoA watch in amusement as Hyoyeon clambers onto Taemin's back to just whack Jongin's head.
"I walked into a pillar and he laughed at me," Hyoyeon explains, shrugging off her university jacket and pulling on a baggy shirt over her sports bra. "He's an ass."
Jongin throws his hands up in the air. "It's the normal thing to do!"
Behind them, Victoria walks in with Yixing, and they both set their bags down before waving to the rest. BoA walks into the middle of the studio and flaps her arms at Hyoyeon and Jongin who are bickering - Jongin with a grin on his face.
"Shush," BoA orders, "let me talk."
Hyoyeon gives Jongin's bare upper arm a good smack before darting next to Taemin. BoA fixes her gaze on Jongin just to make sure he doesn't chase after Hyoyeon in retaliation. Once satisfied nothing's going to happen, BoA clears her throat and opens her mouth.
"For the next few months, we'll be choreographing dances, practicing them, perfecting them, and then we'll be performing them for the annual arts showcase. In between, we'll be discussing dance history, techniques, and the such. Occasionally there will be workshops on different dance genres that will last a couple of weeks at the very least, that will help in broadening your skills. The course is easy, simple. But it'll take a lot of time and commitment. Good?"
Everyone nods and BoA grins. "Okay, let's get started!"
Yunho heaves his leg off the barre and groans when his quads refuse to cooperate with him. Next to him Hyukjae laughs and Donghae gives him a sympathetic look.
"BoA's nice, but she's tough. Think positive though, by the time you graduate, you'll be ripped."
Yunho makes a weird face. He sinks onto the ground and attempts to tug his shoes on without aggravating any more muscles - he fails horribly when his hamstrings start shrieking. Sighing, Yunho changes as fast as possible; he really wants to go back to his dorm and take a long, hot shower.
Yunho shuffles out of the studio as fast as his tired feet will let him. He waves goodbye to BoA and the remaining students before heading down the hallway. He gets to the bus-stop just in time to catch the campus shuttle and he sinks into the plush seat happily. The ride's not long, but Yunho doesn't mind. He gets off the bus a little more rejuvenated, the air conditioning in the bus doing some good to his energy levels. The stairs in his dorm building prove a bit of a challenge, and Yunho opens the door to him room with a huff.
He drops his bag mindlessly down by his bed and grabs a new change of clothes before he's out of his room again and in the showers. Hot water soothes sore muscles and scented gels take away the pungent stink of sweat - Yunho shuts off the water with contentment.
Rubbing at his hair with a towel, Yunho heads back to his room and falls haphazardly onto his bed. He stays in that position for a few moments, gazing up at the cracked ceiling and toying with the covers with his toes. Then, restless and without any homework, Yunho decides to go out for a walk. Besides, it's good to stretch sore muscles.
He ends up back at the arts department - more specifically, at the man-made lake. He's about to head for the bench that he was sitting on yesterday, but someone else is already there. So Yunho shrugs and heads for the other bench across the lake. He's passing by the other person there when he feels eyes on his back. Yunho looks over his shoulder and catches bright eyes that promptly look away when their gazes meet.
Yunho blinks but continues walking.
He's been seated on his bench for less than a minute when the stranger seems to materialize out of nowhere next to him. Yunho jumps and his heart lodges itself somewhere in his esophagus.
"Sorry, did I scare you? I didn't mean to," the stranger says rather flatly, in Yunho's opinion.
"That's alright," Yunho says slowly. "Can I help you with something?"
"Maybe. Why're you here?"
"What?"
"Why," the stranger repeats, "are you here? At the lake?"
"I...thought it was a nice place to sit and relax?"
The stranger blinks, eyelids shuttering over large eyes. "Are you new?"
"Yeah."
"Hm."
Yunho licks his lips. "Is there a reason why you're asking me these questions?"
The stranger suddenly deflates and he sits back. "No one ever comes here. It's always just me."
"Why do you come here then?"
The stranger shrugs, and stands. "To sit and relax."
Then he's gone.
The next time Yunho decides to head down to the lake, it's with half an intention of spotting the stranger there. But as he makes his way over, step by step under the light of the full moon, he realizes that he's the only one there tonight. Hoping that it isn't his presence that drove the stranger away, he sighs and settles down on a random bench, pulling his bag around so that he wouldn't accidentally squash it.
He's in the middle of watching a recording of his most recent dance class on the tiny screen of his phone when he hears something in the distance. Pausing the video, Yunho looks up and squints towards the direction of the sound. He perks his ears, straining to pick up any additional sounds. But it's all quiet, and Yunho turns back to the video. Just as he's laying eyes on the screen, he hears it again.
It's a howl, far away but clear enough, and Yunho feels shivers erupting from his spine. He shoulders his bag, pockets his phone and walks back to his dorm, footsteps a little quicker than usual.
