I already posted this in a travel community, but if anyone has ideas here, feel free to chime in.
Hi! I'm looking for some advice on a travel challenge.
I just finished an intense and stressful semester and I need to get away. There are some things that complicate the situation, but I am sure they are overcomeable (is that a word?).
I need a short, cheap, relaxing vacation. My husband and I are going to Michigan in July for his sister's wedding, and the time we spend there will probably include some relaxing, but I want to get away and take it easy sometime soon, just the two of us. My husband is paid hourly, so I want to take just a weekend away to avoid having him lose wages (leaving a bit early on Friday would be ok). We are near broke so would like to spend as little money as possible.
We live in North Florida.
We have a fuel-efficient vehicle, so a bit of driving is ok. We actually enjoy getting on the open road and talking and listening to music.
We like nature trails, zoos, restaurants, aquariums, museums, malls.
We are pretty laid back and don't want an expensive or elaborate vacation.
I've thought about camping, because it's cheaper than a hotel, but we'd have to buy a tent. I've thought about taking a day trip to a state park, but we'd probably have to leave the state to avoid all the wildfires. I've heard Georgia has some nice state parks (and I've been to a few of them). Someone suggested Callaway Gardens to me. We also like the Atlanta area, although it's at the far end of how far we'd like to drive.
1. Any suggestions for places within about 300 hundred miles of Tallahassee, FL, that you particularly like?
2. Any suggestions for making a vacation as cheap as possible? [Bringing food, rather than eating out, etc.]
3. Any suggestions on good places/websites to buy a tent that is reasonably priced but not crappy?
4. Any suggestions on avoiding crowds if we decide to go somewhere on Memorial Day weekend?
The main point of this trip would be to relax and do some new things and just for a weekend not think about work or school or money problems or ANYTHING.
